How to Install the ECS Jacketed Cable Sealing Kit
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the ECS Jacketed Cable Sealing Kit on concentric neutral shielded cable, ensuring a proper seal and connection.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Cable knife, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Mastic strips, Cold shrink tube, Vinyl tape
- Perform Safety Checks and Initial Inspection
De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation to prevent serious injury or fatality. Inspect all kit components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating products (elbow, joint, or terminator). Ensure all package contents are complete. Ensure you have all required tools and maintain a clean work environment throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Apply First Mastic Strip
Remove the cable jacket for a distance of 2-1/2 inches (64mm) more than the cutback length specified for the cable semicon in the manufacturer’s instructions. Wrap the first mastic strip around the cable jacket, starting 0 to 1/4 inch (0-6mm) from the end. Stretch the mastic as needed to completely encircle the cable. Bend the ground wires back over the mastic and along the jacket, pressing them firmly into the mastic. Ensure ground wires do not touch each other to prevent water ingress.
- Apply Second Mastic Strip, Tape, and Prepare Cable End
Wrap the second mastic strip over the ground wires, positioning it above the previously applied mastic. Press the mastic to fill any voids. Over wrap the mastic and wires tightly with two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape for a width of approximately 1-1/2 inches (40mm). Prepare the cable end according to the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific elbow, joint, or terminator you are installing.
- Slide Cold Shrink Tube and Install Mating Product
Slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable, ensuring the loose end is positioned away from where the connector will be installed. Install the elbow, joint, or terminator onto the cable end following its manufacturer’s instructions.
- Apply Third Mastic Strip, Tape, and Activate Cold Shrink
Apply the third mastic strip as follows: For 200amp products, overlap the product end and cable adapter. For 600amp products, place it immediately below the product, overlapping the cable adapter entrance. For terminators, place it immediately below the stress cone. Over wrap this mastic with two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape. Pull the loose end of the cold shrink tube from the back and unwind the cord clockwise until the plastic core is flush. Continue unwinding clockwise, allowing the tube to collapse from the product end. Ensure the tube overlaps the elbow or joint end by at least 1 inch (25mm) for a proper seal.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires
Connect the elbow, joint, or terminator to the concentric neutral wires as specified in the manufacturer’s instructions for that component.
