Overview

The ABB K151LS-B2230 is a 200 Amp, 15/25 kV DeadBreak elbow designed for permanent, fully shielded, and fully submersible electrical connections. This unit functions as both a locking splice and a repair splice, offering versatility in field applications. A key feature of the K151LS series is that bails are not required for its locking splice configuration, simplifying installation and reducing component needs. When utilized as a repair splice, the assembled length of the K151LS-B2230 provides a substantial 4 inches of allowance for cable replacement or repair, ensuring a secure and reliable connection even after modifications. This product accommodates a cable insulation diameter ranging from 0.635 inches to 0.905 inches, meeting ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 requirements. It is compatible with conductor sizes including AWG Compressed Stranded #1, Solid 1/0, and mm² 42.41. The K151LS-B2230 includes a 01402X Copper Lug, ensuring a high-quality connection to the conductor. The fully shielded, molded rubber housing is 100% peroxide-cured, incorporating both insulation and conductive EPDM materials for durability and performance. The K151LS-B2230 is engineered for medium voltage applications up to 25kV, with a maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage of 15.2kV and phase-to-phase of 26.3kV. It withstands impulse withstand of 125kV BIL and offers continuous current rating of 200A with momentary rating of 10kA Sym for 10 cycles. The pin and socket interlock design withstands pulls of up to 500lbs, making it suitable for direct burial or vault installations. The product is ideal for new installations or repairs on existing cable systems, including UD cable with concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding, or other shielded cables when used with the proper Elastimold® cable shield adapter.

How to Install the K151LSP Non-Separable Straight Plug

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the K151LSP Non-Separable Straight Plug, designed to permanently connect solid dielectric type cable by mating with ELASTIMOLD’S K151LSR. This product is for use on 15kV or 25kV class systems. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutter, Wire strippers, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Rag, Approved solvent

Supplies needed:

K151LSP Non-Separable Straight Plug, K151LSR Mating Receptacle, Lubricant (supplied with K151LSP), Silicone grease, #14AWG Copper Wire (customer supplied, if not using ELASTIMOLD grounding device)

  1. Prepare Cable End

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, allowing sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the cable end. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.

  2. Remove Cable Insulation and Conductive Shield

Remove 1-1/8 inches of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid or larger aluminum cable, remove 1-7/8 inches. Cut squarely; do not pencil the cut. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately after cutting.

  3. Crimp Socket Terminal

Insert the bared conductor into the crimp barrel, ensuring it remains fully seated. Crimp the socket terminal according to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp or indent at least 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  4. Prepare Cable for Plug Installation

Temporarily remove the plastic pin from the socket. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut. DO NOT cut or nick the insulation. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Replace the plastic pin. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent-wet rag, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now following its instructions.

  5. Lubricate Cable and Plug Housing

Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable and to the inside of the plug housing. DO NOT substitute other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the product or its mating product.

  6. Install Plug onto Cable

Push the cable into the plug housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.

  7. Connect to Mating Receptacle

Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches). Exercise care to ensure the nylon rod is not cut during mating, which could leave material inside the interface. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible until the contact assembly 'clicks' and locks into its final position.

  8. Verify Connection and Remove Nylon Rod

Verify the locking contact by pulling on the cables; DO NOT pull the housing. If the parts separate, repeat steps 7B and 7C (re-insert nylon rod and plug). Once verified, pull out and remove the nylon rod.

  9. Ground the Connector

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14AWG or equivalent copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
