How to Install the K151LSP Non-Separable Straight Plug
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the K151LSP Non-Separable Straight Plug, designed to permanently connect solid dielectric type cable by mating with the K151LSR receptacle. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before installation.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimp tool, Approved solvent, Rag
Supplies needed:
K151LSP Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied), Crimp Chart (supplied), Solid dielectric type cable, K151LSR mating receptacle, Silicone grease, #14AWG or equivalent copper wire, Sealing material
- Prepare the Cable Jacket
For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the cable end. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before proceeding.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductive Shield
Remove 1-1/8 inches of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid or larger aluminum cable, remove 1-7/8 inches. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Immediately wire brush bare aluminum conductors.
- Crimp the Socket Terminal
Insert the bared conductor fully into the crimp barrel. Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, starting at the crimp line imprinted on the barrel. Rotate each successive crimp or indent at least 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare the Semi-Conductive Shield and Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut, ensuring not to cut or nick the insulation. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Replace the plastic pin. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket, to remove all semi-conducting residue. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it per its instructions.
- Lubricate Cable and Housing
Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute lubricants, as other types may harm the product or its mating part.
- Install Plug on Cable
Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care not to cut the rod. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible until the contact assembly 'clicks' and locks into its final position.
- Verify Connection and Remove Rod
Verify the locking contact by pulling on the cables; do not pull the housing. If the parts separate, repeat steps 7B and 7C. Pull out the nylon rod.
- Connect Grounding
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not used, connect customer-supplied #14AWG or equivalent copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
