Overview

The ABB FYU 2 Flood-Seal Mechanical Fuse and Disconnect Kit, part of the Y Line series, delivers reliable fused protection and disconnection for street and highway lighting circuits. This mechanical run compression kit supports main conductor sizes from 14 AWG to 2 AWG and tap conductor sizes from 4 AWG to 2 AWG, ensuring compatibility with standard lighting infrastructure wiring. The Flood-Seal design provides environmental protection against moisture, dust, and corrosion, making it ideal for outdoor installations where durability is critical. The kit includes a Y-Type Insert & Housing (line side), Load End Insert with Connector, Load End Twin Cap, connecting link (disconnect kits only), nut, bolt, Belleville washers, and lugs. Installation requires stripping 1/2" of conductor insulation, inserting wires into the connector, and tightening screws to secure connections. Silicone grease application ensures long-term reliability by preventing moisture ingress and corrosion. The 600V rated design meets the demands of high-voltage lighting circuits, while the mechanical compression connection minimizes maintenance requirements. This kit is specifically engineered for Y Line series applications, where secure, weather-resistant fused disconnection is essential for operational safety and efficiency.

How to Install the FYU/DYU Street Lighting Kit

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for assembling and installing the FYU/DYU Y-Type street lighting kit, including cable preparation, component assembly, and wiring connections.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Measuring tool, Wire strippers, Crimp tool, Wood dowel, 1/8" hex wrench

Supplies needed:

FYU/DYU Y-Type housing kit, Lubricant, Load side cable, Run connection cable, Fuse (13/32" by 1 1/2", 600 Volt 30 Amp max., non-glass body) OR Connecting link (for DYU only)

  1. Prepare Load Side Housing for Cable

Measure the cable diameter. Refer to Table 1 and select the corresponding section on the load side (plug) housing. Cut off the remaining sections of the housing to match the size referenced in the Range column of Table 1. For example, if the cable OD is 0.390 inch, cut at the 4-2 line.

  2. Strip Load Side Cable Insulation

WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect power before installation. CAUTION: Product must be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. CAUTION: Identify LINE and LOAD sides of wiring and molded connector bodies before beginning installation. Thoroughly clean approximately 8 inches along the load side cable end. Apply lubricant and insert the cable through the small hole in the load side (plug) housing. Push the cable through a sufficient distance to permit 3/8 inch for stripping of insulation. Strip the insulation a distance of 3/8 inch as shown in the diagram.

  3. Crimp Fuse Holder

Insert the prepared cable into the crimp barrel of the fuse holder and crimp it securely. Refer to Table 2 for suggested tool and die combinations based on conductor size.

  4. Install Fuse Holder into Load Side Housing

Lightly apply lubricant to the outside of the fuse holder. Place the wood dowel into the socket and position the free end of the dowel against a firm surface. Push the load side (plug) housing forward until the fuse holder snaps into position. Wipe off any excess lubricant.

  5. Insert Fuse or Connecting Link

Insert a 13/32 inch by 1 1/2 inch fuse (600 Volt 30 Amp max.) or a connecting link (for DYU only) into the load side (plug) housing. WARNING: DO NOT use a glass body fuse.

  6. Prepare Y-Type Housing and Cable for Run Connection

For the run connection, select and cut the correct cut-off ring on the Y-Type housing for the cable being used. Cut and bevel the cable insulation. Apply lubricant to the end of the cable and the cut opening of the housing. Slide the cable through until it extends 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing (Figure A). Strip the insulation 3/8 to 1/2 inch (Figure B). CAUTION: Do not over strip.

  7. Tighten Cables in Y-Type Housing

Insert cables as shown in the diagram. Tighten to a minimum of 30 in/lbs using a 1/8 inch hex wrench.

  8. Assemble Line End Insert

Apply lubricant as shown in the diagram. Slide the Y-Type housing up to the bottom of the line end insert. Push the line end insert into the opening of the Y-Type housing. While pulling on the cables and holding onto the Y-Type housing, slide the housing toward the line end insert. Push the line end insert until it is fully seated in the housing.

  9. Connect Load Side to Line End

Lubricate both the male and female components. Insert the load side (plug) housing, with the installed link or fuse clip, into the line end insert.
