Overview

The ABB FYA 1/0 Flood-Seal Street and Highway Lighting Mechanical Fuse and Disconnect Kit (SKU: FYA 1/0) from ABB Installation Products provides reliable electrical connections for outdoor lighting infrastructure. This Y-type kit integrates a fused disconnect mechanism, offering essential overcurrent protection and a safe means for circuit isolation during maintenance. Engineered for 1/0 AWG stranded aluminum conductors in the run and a copper tap, this kit ensures robust connectivity for demanding outdoor applications. The kit includes crimped lug connectors for secure wire terminations. Installation is facilitated with specified installing dies: 52, BG, 243, and a 5/8 inch die size. The kit contains a Y-Type Insert & Housing (Line Side), a Connecting Link (for disconnect kits), a Nut, Bolt, 2 Belleville Washers & 2 Lugs, a Load End Insert with Connector, and a Load End Twin Cap. It is rated for 600V and is designed for midget type fuses (1 1/2 x 13/32 inch), which are not included. The Flood-Seal® YY-Type Disconnect Kits are suitable for YDA, YFA(AL), YDC, and YFC(CU) series. The catalog specifies conductor size ranges for the run as 4-1/0 AWG with a decimal range of .380-.560 inches. Installation instructions emphasize wiping cables clean, beveling insulation on larger cables, and applying silicone grease to cable ends and housing openings. Cables should extend 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing. Strip insulation to bare 1/2 inch of conductor, insert wires into the connector, and tighten screws securely. The product is designed for direct burial or exposed installations where environmental resilience is critical. The warranty is for two (2) years from the date of purchase against defects in materials and workmanship.

How to Install the FYA/DYA/FYC/DYC Street Lighting Kit

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for assembling and connecting the FYA, DYA, FYC, or DYC street lighting kit, including cable preparation, fuse installation, and housing assembly for street lighting applications.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable diameter measuring tool, Cutting tool, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wood dowel, Wire brush (for aluminum cables), Wrench (for bolted assembly)

Supplies needed:

Load side cable, Lubricant, Fuse holder, Fuse (13/32" x 1 1/2", 600V 30A max) or connecting link, Y-Type housing, Line end insert, Compression lugs, HM53 inhibitor (or equivalent for aluminum), Nut, Bolt, Belleville washers

  1. Disconnect Power and Prepare for Installation

Disconnect power to prevent risk of shock before beginning installation. Ensure the product is installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Identify the LINE and LOAD sides of the wiring and molded connector bodies before proceeding with any steps.

  2. Prepare the Load Side Housing

Measure the load side cable diameter. Refer to Table 1 in the documentation to select the corresponding section on the load side (plug) housing. Cut off any remaining sections of the housing to match the size referenced in the Range column for your cable's outside diameter.

  3. Prepare and Strip the Load Side Cable

Thoroughly clean approximately 8 inches along the load side cable end. Apply lubricant and insert the cable through the small hole in the load side (plug) housing. Push the cable through a sufficient distance to allow for 3/8 inch for stripping of insulation. Strip 3/8 inch of insulation from the cable end as shown in the documentation.

  4. Crimp the Fuse Holder to the Load Side Cable

Insert the stripped load side cable into the crimp barrel of the fuse holder. Crimp the cable securely using a suitable crimping tool and die, referring to Table 2 in the documentation for suggested tools and dies. CAUTION: Do not over strip the cable insulation.

  5. Secure the Fuse Holder

Lightly apply lubricant to the outside of the fuse holder. Place the wood dowel into the fuse holder socket and position the free end of the dowel against a firm surface. Push the load side (plug) housing forward until the fuse holder snaps into its locked position. Wipe off any excess lubricant.

  6. Install the Fuse or Connecting Link

Insert a 13/32 inch by 1 1/2 inch fuse (600 Volt, 30 Amp maximum) or the connecting link (if applicable for DYA & DYC models) into the load side (plug) housing. WARNING: DO NOT use a glass body fuse.

  7. Prepare the Y-Type Housing and Line End Cable

For a run connection, select and cut the correct cut-off ring on the Y-Type housing for the cable being used. Cut and bevel the cable insulation. Apply lubricant to the end of the cable and the cut opening of the housing. Slide the cable through until it extends 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing. Strip the insulation to fit the compression lugs.

  8. Crimp Lugs to the Line End Cable

Crimp the compression lugs onto the stripped line end cable using the proper crimping tool. Ensure the pad portions of the lugs are positioned back to back. For aluminum cables only: wire brush the pads of the lugs, apply HM53 inhibitor or equivalent on the pads, and then wipe off any excess inhibitor.

  9. Assemble the Line End Insert

Assemble the line end insert components, including the nut, bolt, Belleville washers, and lugs, as shown in the illustration. Tighten the bolted assembly securely.

  10. Connect the Line End Insert to the Y-Type Housing

Apply lubricant to the mating surfaces as shown in the documentation. Slide the Y-Type housing up to the bottom of the line end insert. Push the line end insert into the opening of the Y-Type housing. While pulling on the cables and holding the Y-Type housing, slide the housing toward the line end insert. Push the line end insert until it is fully seated in the housing.

  11. Connect the Load Side Housing to the Line End Insert

Lubricate both the male and female components. Insert the load side (plug) housing, which contains the installed link or fuse clip, into the line end insert until it is securely connected.
