How to Crimp RSK Series Wrap Around Connectors with the ERG740 Tool

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for preparing cables and ground wires, installing and gauging dies, and crimping RSK Series Wrap Around Connectors using the ERG740 ergonomic hand tool to ensure proper grounding of shielded cables.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

ERG740 Ergonomic Hand Tool, Calibrated measuring tool or RSK gauge, Calipers, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

RSK Series Wrap Around Connectors, Die set (specific to connector), Shielded cable, Ground wire

  1. Read Safety Information and Select Components

Before operating, read and understand all safety information in the manual. Measure the diameter of the cable shield using a calibrated measuring tool or the RSK gauge. For twisted pair or non-symmetrical cables, measure the largest width. Refer to Table 1 to select the appropriate RSK connector and installing die based on your measurements.

  2. Install Dies into the ERG740 Tool

Open the ERG740 tool handles completely to fully retract the ram. Insert the stem of the upper die into the tool frame. Insert the separation spring of the lower die into the upper die opening, push up firmly, and then insert the lower die stem into the hole in the ram.

  3. Gauge the Installed Dies

Close the tool handles until the die faces are touching. Using calipers, measure the die nest height and compare it to the die gauging chart to ensure the die nest opening is within the specified tolerance range.

  4. Prepare the Shielded Cable

Carefully remove the cable jacket as required and prepare the shield according to the standard method illustration. If the inner conductor insulation is thin (vinyl <= 0.015 in or Teflon <= 0.010 in), or if the shield is foil/spiral wrapped, use foldback method 1 or 2 as illustrated. After folding back, re-measure the shield diameter and refer to Table 1 for proper die selection if necessary. CAUTION: Use extreme care to prevent nicking or cutting the shield or inner conductor insulation during stripping, as this could cause short circuits.

  5. Prepare the Ground Wire

For a single ground wire, strip 7/16 inch (11mm) and twist the strands together. For two ground wires, strip each wire 1/2 inch (12mm) and twist them together. If hairpinning is desired, strip 1/2 inch (12mm) and bend as shown, then use one die size larger for the connector. CAUTION: Do not solder dip the ground wire ends. Do not use solid ground wire.

  6. Install the Connector on the Shielded Cable

Insert the selected RSK connector, with the ground trap facing up, into the nest area of the die, ensuring it is centered. Place the prepared ground wire into the ground trap and the shielded cable into the bottom of the connector. Ensure the cable jacket and ground wire insulation butt against the metal connector edge. The ground wire can exit from either direction. CAUTION: Ensure neither the cable outer jacket nor the ground wire insulation is under the metal portion of the connector, as this will overload the dies. WARNING: Keep all body parts away from the die nest during the crimping procedure. WARNING: Handles are non-insulating; do not crimp on hot energized wires. Squeeze the tool handles completely to form the connector around the shield.
