How to Set Up and Install Dies for the BAIR22-6 Air-Powered Crimping Tool
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for setting up the BAIR22-6 air-powered crimping tool, including connecting the air supply, installing the crimping dies, and performing an optional calibration verification.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Vise (optional, for some dies), Gage pins (for calibration verification)
Supplies needed:
Crimping dies, Main air supply, SAE #10 paraffin base oil (optional, for lubrication)
- Unpack and Position the Tool
Remove the BAIR22-6 crimping tool and the filter/regulator/lubricator assembly from their shipping container. Position the crimping tool securely on a workbench or table, and place the foot switch on the floor in a convenient operating location.
- Connect the Air Supply
Connect the foot pedal air inlet line to the outlet of the filter/regulator/lubricator assembly. Then, connect your main air supply line to the inlet of the filter/regulator/lubricator assembly. Ensure all connections are secure and avoid adding airline extensions between the foot pedal and the filter/regulator/lubricator assembly to prevent line pressure drops. WARNING: Never exceed 100 PSI operating pressure for the tool.
- Install the Crimping Dies
First, disconnect the air supply from the tool for safety. Lift the spring-loaded upper die support to its maximum height and lock it in place by tightening the brass lock screw. Install the appropriate die nest into the lower support and the die indentor into the upper die support using the provided screws, hand-tightening them lightly. (NOTE: If your dies require dowel pins, remove the upper and lower die supports, place them in a vise, install the dies and dowel pins, then re-install the supports onto the tool). Loosen the brass lock screw to allow the upper die support to descend, ensuring the die indentor and nest engage and align. Securely tighten all screws to prevent any die movement. Reconnect the air supply to the tool. WARNING: Wear eye protection when operating or servicing this tool.
- Verify Calibration (Optional)
Ensure the tool is connected to the air supply. Cycle the tool until the dies bottom out. Using appropriate gage pins, verify that each die nest meets the specified gaging requirements as detailed in the corresponding gaging tables (e.g., TABLE 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6) for your specific dies. If the tool fails any test, do not attempt repair; contact a Thomas & Betts Tool Service Center. WARNING: Keep fingers clear of the die nest during the gaging procedure.
