How to Set Up and Operate the PAIR22-6 Air-Powered Crimping Tool
This guide provides essential instructions for the safe setup, die installation, and operation of the PAIR22-6 Air-powered Hydraulic Crimping Tool. Learn how to prepare the tool for crimping 22 AWG through 6 AWG wires.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Eye protection, Gage pins
Supplies needed:
Air supply line, Crimping dies, Screws for dies, Special headed pins (if needed), Terminals (22-6 AWG), Cable (22-6 AWG)
- Unpack and Position the Tool
Carefully remove the PAIR22-6 crimping tool from its shipping container. Position the tool securely on a stable workbench or table, ensuring it is ready for air supply connection.
- Connect Air Supply
Connect the air supply line to the inlet located at the rear of the tool. Ensure the air supply provides 85-90 psi operating pressure and never exceeds 100 psi. WARNING: Do not attempt to connect the tool to an energized air line.
- Install Crimping Dies
First, disconnect the air supply from the tool. Install the appropriate die nest into the spring-loaded support and the die indentor into the yoke using the provided screws. Hand tighten the screws, then ensure the dies are engaged and aligned before securely tightening the screws. Reconnect the air supply. WARNING: Disconnect the tool from the air supply when changing dies. Do not operate the tool without dies, as this can cause damage.
- Prepare Cable and Terminal
Follow the terminal manufacturer's instructions to strip the cable to the appropriate length. Select the correct crimping dies, terminal, and cable combination to ensure a complete and secure crimp.
- Perform a Crimp
Using the release knob, open the spring-loaded lower die. Insert the terminal into the proper crimping head die nest and allow the lower die to close. Insert the stripped cable into the terminal. Depress and hold the actuating handle until the tool ram extends completely and the tool cycles. WARNING: Keep hands away from the crimping head during operation. Wear eye protection to prevent injury from flying debris. An incomplete crimp can cause a fire; ensure the tool cycles completely.
- Verify Calibration
Cycle the tool until the dies bottom out. Using the appropriate gage pins, verify that each die nest meets the gaging requirements specified in the tool's manual (Tables 2-6). If the tool fails any test, do not attempt repair; contact a Thomas & Betts Tool Service Center. WARNING: Keep fingers clear of the die nest during the gaging procedure.
