How to Install the DYC/DYA Street Lighting Kit
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the DYC (copper) or DYA (aluminum) Y-Type street lighting kit, including cable preparation, component assembly, and wiring connections. CAUTION: Product must be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Identify LINE and LOAD sides of wiring and molded connector bodies before beginning installation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Measuring tool, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Crimping tool (e.g., T&B WT111M or TBM45S with appropriate die), Wood dowel, Wire brush (for aluminum installations)
Supplies needed:
Y-Type housing (A), Load side (Plug) housing (B), Line end insert (C), Fuse holder (D), Connecting link (E) (DYA & DYC only), Fuse (F) (13/32 inch x 1 1/2 inch, 600 Volt 30 Amp max, not included), 1 Nut, 1 Bolt, 2 Belleville washers & 2 Lugs (G), Lubricant, Load side cable, Run connection cable, HM53 inhibitor or equivalent (for aluminum installations)
- Prepare Load Side Housing
WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect power before installation. Measure the cable diameter. Refer to Table 1 in the documentation and select the corresponding section on the load side (plug) housing. Cut off the remaining sections of the housing to match the size referenced in the Range column.
- Prepare Load Side Cable
Thoroughly clean approximately 8 inches along the load side cable end. Apply lubricant and insert the cable through the small hole in the load side (plug) housing. Push the cable through a sufficient distance to permit 3/8 inch for stripping of insulation. Strip the insulation a distance of 3/8 inch. CAUTION: Do not over strip.
- Crimp Fuse Holder to Cable
Insert the stripped cable into the crimp barrel of the fuse holder. Crimp the connection using a suitable crimping tool and die, referring to Table 2 in the documentation for suggested tools and dies based on conductor size.
- Assemble Fuse Holder into Load Side Housing
Apply lubricant lightly to the outside of the fuse holder. Place the wood dowel into the fuse holder socket and position the free end of the dowel against a firm surface. Push the load side (plug) housing forward until the fuse holder snaps into its locked position. Wipe off any excess lubricant.
- Insert Fuse or Connecting Link
Insert a 13/32 inch by 1 1/2 inch fuse (600 Volt 30 Amp maximum) or the connecting link (E) into the load side (plug) housing. WARNING: DO NOT use a glass body fuse.
- Prepare Y-Type Housing and Run Cable (for run connection)
For a run connection, select and cut the correct cut-off ring on the Y-Type housing (A) for the cable being used. Cut and bevel the cable insulation. Apply lubricant to the end of the cable and the cut opening of the housing. Slide the cable through until it extends 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing. Strip the insulation to fit the compression lugs.
- Crimp Lugs and Apply Inhibitor (if aluminum)
Crimp the lugs onto the stripped cable ends using a proper crimping tool, ensuring the pad portions of the lugs are back to back. If using aluminum cable, wire brush the pads of the lugs, then apply HM53 inhibitor or an equivalent product to the pads. Wipe off any excess inhibitor.
- Assemble Line End Insert
Assemble the line end insert (C) as shown in the illustration. Tighten the bolted assembly (G) securely.
- Assemble Line End Insert into Y-Type Housing
Apply lubricant to the line end insert as shown in the illustration. Slide the Y-Type housing (A) up to the bottom of the line end insert. Push the line end insert into the opening of the Y-Type housing. While pulling on the cables and holding onto the Y-Type housing, slide the housing toward the line end insert. Push the line end insert until it is fully seated in the housing.
- Connect Load Side to Line End
Lubricate both the male and female components of the connection. Insert the load side (plug) housing (B), which contains the installed link or fuse clip, into the line end insert (C).
