How to Install Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors with aluminum or copper conductors, including conductor preparation, insertion, and proper torque application for both setscrews and mounting hardware.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound, Aluminum Dual Rated Connector, Conductors (aluminum, copper-clad aluminum, or copper), Mounting hardware, Flat washers (optional), Belleville washers (optional)
- Verify Conductor and Connector Size
CAUTION: De-energize before installing connectors. Check the conductor size marked on the connector to ensure it is the correct connector for the conductor size you intend to use.
- Strip Conductor Insulation
Carefully strip the conductor insulation to the length of the connector barrel, avoiding any damage to the conductor strands during the process.
- Prepare and Insert Conductor
Wire brush the conductor thoroughly. If using an aluminum conductor, apply Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound. Fully insert the prepared conductor into the connector and wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor.
- Torque Connector Setscrew
Identify the maximum conductor size the connector accommodates. Apply the recommended tightening torque to the setscrew in accordance with TABLE 1 (refer to the original documentation for specific values) to ensure a secure connection.
- Apply Oxide Inhibitor to Contact Surface
Prior to mounting the connector, apply Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the flat contact surface of the connector.
- Torque Mounting Hardware
Install the mounting hardware. Torque the mounting hardware to the values shown in TABLE 2 (refer to the original documentation for specific values). For best installation practice, use flat and Belleville washers in conjunction with the mounting hardware, although the connectors will perform satisfactorily without them.
