How to Install Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors with aluminum or copper conductors, including preparation, wiring, and torquing procedures.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

Aluminum or copper conductors, Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound, Mounting hardware (bolts), Flat washers (recommended), Belleville washers (recommended)

  1. Verify Conductor Compatibility

CAUTION: De-energize the system before installing connectors. Check the conductor size marked on the connector to ensure it is the correct connector for the conductor size you intend to use.

  2. Prepare the Conductor

Carefully strip the conductor insulation to the length of the connector barrel, avoiding any damage to the conductor strands. Wire brush the conductor thoroughly. If using an aluminum conductor, apply Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the conductor.

  3. Insert Conductor

Fully insert the prepared conductor into the connector. If you applied oxide inhibitor, wipe off any excess compound from the conductor and connector.

  4. Tighten Connector Setscrew

Each connector has a specific tightening torque range. Once the proper connector has been selected, apply the recommended tightening torque to the setscrew in accordance with TABLE 1, based on the connector's maximum conductor size rating. For example, connectors rated for 10-14 AWG require 35 In.-Lbs., 8 AWG require 40 In.-Lbs., 4-6 AWG require 45 In.-Lbs., and 2/0-14 AWG require 50 In.-Lbs.

  5. Apply Inhibitor to Contact Surface

Prior to mounting the connector, apply Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the flat contact surface of the connector.

  6. Torque Mounting Hardware

Mount the connector using appropriate mounting hardware. Torque the mounting hardware to the values shown in TABLE 2, based on the bolt diameter and material (aluminum or steel). For optimal installation practice, use flat and Belleville washers in conjunction with the mounting hardware.
