How to Install Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors with aluminum or copper conductors, including preparation, insertion, and proper torque application.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound, Aluminum or copper conductors, Mounting hardware, Flat and Belleville washers
- De-energize Circuit and Verify Connector Size
De-energize the circuit before beginning any work to ensure safety. Check the conductor size marked on the connector to confirm it is the correct connector for the conductor size you are using.
- Strip Conductor Insulation
Carefully strip the conductor insulation. Use the length of the connector barrel to measure the appropriate strip length, and avoid any damage to the conductor strands during this process.
- Prepare and Insert Conductor
Wire brush the conductor thoroughly. If using an aluminum conductor, apply Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound. Fully insert the conductor into the connector, then wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor.
- Torque Connector Setscrew
Identify the maximum conductor size the connector accommodates. Apply the recommended tightening torque to the setscrew in accordance with TABLE 1 (e.g., 35 in.-lbs for 10-14 AWG, 40 in.-lbs for 8 AWG, 45 in.-lbs for 4-6 AWG, 50 in.-lbs for 2/0-14).
- Apply Oxide Inhibitor to Contact Surface
Prior to mounting the connector, apply Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the flat contact surface of the connector.
- Mount and Torque Hardware
Secure the connector using appropriate mounting hardware. Torque the mounting hardware to the values shown in TABLE 2 (e.g., for steel bolts: 72 in.-lbs for 1/4 inch, 132 in.-lbs for 5/16 inch). For good installation practice, use flat and Belleville washers in conjunction with the mounting hardware.
