How to Install Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors with aluminum or copper conductors, including preparation, inhibitor application, and proper torque specifications.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound, Mounting hardware, Flat washers, Belleville washers

  1. De-energize System

CAUTION: De-energize the electrical system completely before beginning any installation work on the connectors to prevent electrical shock or injury.

  2. Verify Connector and Conductor Size

Check the conductor size marked on the connector to ensure it is the correct connector for the conductor size you are using.

  3. Prepare Conductor Insulation

Carefully strip the conductor insulation, avoiding any damage to the conductor strands. Use the length of the connector barrel to measure the appropriate strip length.

  4. Clean Conductor and Apply Inhibitor

Wire brush the conductor thoroughly. If using an aluminum conductor, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound. Fully insert the conductor into the connector and wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor.

  5. Tighten Connector Setscrew

Each connector has one tightening torque range regardless of the conductor size it accommodates. Once the proper connector is selected, check the maximum conductor size it will accommodate and apply the recommended tightening torque to the setscrew in accordance with TABLE 1.

  6. Apply Inhibitor to Contact Surface

Prior to mounting the connector, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the flat contact surface of the connector.

  7. Mount Connector Hardware

Torque the mounting hardware to the values shown in TABLE 2. For good installation practice, use flat and Belleville washers in conjunction with the mounting hardware, although the connectors will perform satisfactorily without them.
