This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors with aluminum or copper conductors, including conductor preparation and proper tightening procedures.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound, Aluminum, copper-clad aluminum, or copper conductors, Flat and Belleville washers
- De-energize Circuit
Before beginning any installation, ensure the circuit is completely de-energized to prevent electrical shock. Verify with appropriate testing equipment.
- Verify Connector and Conductor Size
Check the conductor size marked on the connector to ensure it is the correct connector for the conductor size you are using.
- Prepare Conductor Insulation
Carefully strip the conductor insulation to the length of the connector barrel, avoiding any damage to the conductor strands during the process.
- Clean Conductor and Apply Oxide Inhibitor
Wire brush the conductor thoroughly. If using an aluminum conductor, apply Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the conductor, then fully insert the conductor into the connector. Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor.
- Tighten Connector Setscrew
Apply the recommended tightening torque to the setscrew in accordance with TABLE 1, based on the maximum conductor size the connector accommodates. Refer to the table for specific torque values.
- Apply Oxide Inhibitor to Connector Contact Surface
Before mounting, apply Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the flat contact surface of the connector.
- Mount Connector and Torque Hardware
Mount the connector using appropriate hardware. Torque the mounting hardware to the values shown in TABLE 2. For best practice, use flat and Belleville washers in conjunction with the mounting hardware.
