How to Install Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors with aluminum or copper conductors. It covers conductor preparation, connector insertion, and proper torque application for both setscrews and mounting hardware.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound, Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors, Aluminum, Copper, or Copper-Clad Aluminum Conductors, Mounting hardware, Flat and Belleville washers

  1. De-energize Circuit and Verify Components

Before beginning installation, ensure the circuit is de-energized to prevent electrical shock. Verify that the conductor size matches the size marked on the connector to ensure proper fit and performance.

  2. Prepare the Conductor

Carefully strip the conductor insulation to the length of the connector barrel, being careful to avoid any damage to the conductor strands during the stripping process.

  3. Apply Oxide Inhibitor and Insert Conductor

Wire brush the conductor thoroughly. If using an aluminum conductor, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the conductor. Fully insert the conductor into the connector barrel and wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor.

  4. Torque the Connector Setscrew

Identify the maximum conductor size the connector accommodates. Apply the recommended tightening torque to the setscrew as specified in TABLE 1 (e.g., 35 In.-Lbs. for 10-14 AWG) to securely fasten the conductor within the connector.

  5. Prepare Connector for Mounting

Prior to mounting, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the flat contact surface of the connector where it will make contact with the mounting surface.

  6. Mount the Connector

Mount the connector using appropriate mounting hardware. Torque the mounting hardware to the values shown in TABLE 2 (e.g., 72 In.-Lbs. for a 1/4 inch steel bolt). For best installation practice, use flat and Belleville washers in conjunction with the mounting hardware.
