How to Install Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors with both aluminum and copper conductors, including preparation, insertion, and proper torque application.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound, Mounting hardware (bolts, nuts), Flat washers, Belleville washers

  1. De-energize Circuit and Verify Conductor Size

CAUTION: De-energize the circuit before installing connectors to prevent electrical shock. Check the conductor size marked on the connector to ensure it is the correct connector for the conductor size you are using.

  2. Strip Conductor Insulation

Carefully strip the conductor insulation to the length of the connector barrel, avoiding any damage to the conductor strands. Refer to Figure 1 (not provided in document) for visual guidance on strip length.

  3. Prepare Conductor and Insert into Connector

Wire brush the conductor thoroughly. If using an aluminum conductor, apply Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound. Fully insert the prepared conductor into the connector barrel. Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor. Refer to Figure 2 and 3 (not provided in document) for visual guidance.

  4. Apply Torque to Connector Setscrew

Identify the maximum conductor size the connector accommodates. Apply the recommended tightening torque to the setscrew in accordance with TABLE 1. Refer to Figure 4 (not provided in document) for the setscrew location.

  5. Apply Oxide Inhibitor to Contact Surface

Prior to mounting the connector, apply Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the flat contact surface of the connector.

  6. Mount Connector and Torque Hardware

Mount the connector using appropriate mounting hardware. Torque the mounting hardware to the values shown in TABLE 2. For best installation practice, use flat and Belleville washers in conjunction with the mounting hardware, although the connectors will perform satisfactorily without them. Refer to Figure 4 (not provided in document) for mounting hardware location.
