This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors with both aluminum and copper conductors, including preparation, wiring, and proper torque application.

Supplies needed:
Oxide inhibiting compound (Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP), Mounting hardware, Flat washers, Belleville washers
- De-energize and Verify Conductor Size
CAUTION: De-energize the circuit before installing connectors to prevent electrical shock. Then, check the conductor size marked on the connector to ensure it is the correct connector for the conductor size you are using.
- Strip Conductor Insulation
Carefully strip the conductor insulation. Avoid any damage to the conductor strands. Use the length of the connector's conductor barrel to measure the appropriate strip length.
- Prepare and Insert Conductor
Wire brush the conductor thoroughly. If using an aluminum conductor, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound. Fully insert the prepared conductor into the connector. Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor.
- Tighten Connector Setscrew
Apply the recommended tightening torque to the setscrew in accordance with TABLE 1. Refer to the table for specific torque values based on the connector's maximum conductor size (e.g., 10-14 AWG: 35 In.-Lbs., 8 AWG: 40 In.-Lbs., 4-6 AWG: 45 In.-Lbs., 2/0-14: 50 In.-Lbs., 250-6: 275 In.-Lbs., 350-10: 375 In.-Lbs., 500-6: 375 In.-Lbs., 750-1/0: 375 In.-Lbs.).
- Apply Oxide Inhibitor to Contact Surface
Before mounting, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the flat contact surface of the connector.
- Mount the Connector and Torque Hardware
Mount the connector using appropriate mounting hardware. Torque the mounting hardware to the values shown in TABLE 2 (e.g., for Steel: 1/4" bolt: 72 In.-Lbs., 5/16": 132 In.-Lbs., 3/8": 228 In.-Lbs., 7/16": 360 In.-Lbs., 1/2": 480 In.-Lbs., 5/8": 660 In.-Lbs.). For best practice, use flat and Belleville washers with the mounting hardware.
