How to Install the LINK-C Deadbreak Cam Link Operable Connector System

This guide provides instructions for installing the LINK-C 600 amp deadbreak cam link operable connector system, which offers a fully shielded, submersible connection between cable and apparatus, with a 200 amp tap for 15kV and 25kV.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

600ATM Operating Tool, Torque wrench, Hot stick, Wire strippers, Suitable tool for 1 inch hex

Supplies needed:

ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant, Hex nuts, Lockwashers, Studs (3/8-16 x 2” long), #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)

  1. Prepare for Installation and De-energize Apparatus

WARNING: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. If the product includes protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. Ensure all required tools and supplies are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Install 600 Amp Elbow onto Cable

Install the 600 amp elbow onto the cable according to the installation instructions supplied with the elbow. Ensure the elbow is positioned such that it will align correctly with the stand-off plug.

  3. Mount the Stand-Off Plug (If Applicable)

Weld three 3/8-16 x 2” studs to the equipment faceplate according to customer standard practice and specified dimensions. Install three hex nuts onto the studs to support the stand-off plug, ensuring it aligns in-line with the apparatus bushing. Position the stand-off plug over the three studs, resting it on the previously installed nuts or optional spacers. Secure the stand-off plug by installing a lockwasher and hex nut on each of the three studs, then tighten to 12 ft-lbs torque. Verify the top surfaces of the bushing and stand-off plug are in-line; readjust nuts as needed.

  4. Install Bushing Extender and Elbow

Clean and thoroughly lubricate the apparatus bushing and both interfaces of the 600 amp bushing extender using ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant. Install the bushing extender onto the apparatus bushing. Insert the 600ATM into the retainer contact, engage its internal hex broach, and then insert the retainer contact into the bushing extender. Thread the retainer contact into the apparatus bushing using a suitable tool applied to the 1” hex portion of the 600ATM, and torque to 50-60 ft-lbs. Clean and thoroughly lubricate the epoxy standoff plug and both interfaces of the 600 amp elbow with ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant. Install the elbow onto the epoxy standoff plug. Insert the 600AMT into the retainer contact, engage its internal hex broach, and then insert the retainer contact into the 600 amp elbow through the compression lug hole. Thread the retainer contact into the epoxy standoff plug using a suitable tool applied to the 1” hex portion of the 600AMT, and torque to 50-60 ft-lbs.

  5. Install the Alignment Bracket

Remove the bushing extender clamp and elbow clamp from the alignment bracket. Position the alignment bracket on the bushing extender, measuring 2.5 inches (63.5mm) from the grounding eye. Assemble the bushing extender clamp to the alignment bracket using the supplied hardware. Torque the clamp by alternating sides until the clamp tabs are flush with each other and tight on both sides.

  6. Position and Secure the Elbow

Position the elbow within the alignment bracket, ensuring the elbow cuff is lined up evenly with the bushing extender cuff. Assemble the elbow clamp to the alignment bracket with the supplied hardware. Torque the clamp by alternating sides until the clamp tabs are flush and tight on both sides. Ensure the elbow clamp notch faces the cable entrance of the elbow.

  7. Install the LINK-C Connector

Clean and thoroughly lubricate both 600 ampere interfaces of the Link with ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant. Align the Link so that it is perpendicular to the switch faceplate when inserted into the bushing extender and elbow. Insert the Link into the bushing extender and elbow, ensuring both lever arms are positioned on the inside of the alignment bracket legs. Engage the pivot pin into the slots in the alignment bracket legs. While pushing inward, use a hot stick eye to move the lever arms downward, engaging the roller pin and moving the Link inward. Continue until the lever arms are perpendicular to the alignment bracket leg.

  8. Grounding and Mating Product Installation

Ground the elbow: Feed a #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow, twist it tight, and connect it securely to ground. Clean and lubricate the 200 amp interface on the Link. Ground the desired mating product, then install it onto the 200 amp interface according to its specific installation instructions. Ground the cable: If using concentric neutral cable, twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground with an appropriate connector. If using 20MA or 21MA grounding devices, connect the ground lead from the device to ground using a suitable connector. For three-phase installations, ensure all grounds from all three phases are tied to a common ground point.
