How to Install the 771B20GAD Deadbreak Grounding Device and 776BGADDR Insulated Cap
Install the 771B20GAD Deadbreak Grounding Device and the 776BGADDR Insulated Cap with Test Point onto a 600Amp elbow. This guide covers cleaning, lubrication, connection, torque specifications, and grounding wire attachment for high voltage electrical apparatus.
Tools needed:
Torque Wrench, 1” Hex Deep Socket, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (supplied with product), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm2) Copper Wire
- Ensure Safety and Inspect Components
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Read all instructions thoroughly and have all required tools ready. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE the supplied lubricant.
- Connect the 771B20GAD Grounding Device
Clean and lubricate the 771B20GAD Grounding Connector and the 600Amp elbow interface with the supplied lubricant. Insert the 771B20GAD Grounding Connector into the elbow and rotate clockwise to engage the stud. Using a 1” deep socket and a torque wrench, continue rotating clockwise until the connector stops, then tighten to 55-60 ft/lbs torque. Remove the socket. Attach one end of a No. 14 AWG copper wire through the grounding eye, twist tightly, and connect the other end to the system ground.
- Prepare Insulating Cap Grounding Wire
Insert a length of No. 14 AWG (2.5mm2) copper wire through the grounding eye of the 776BGADDR insulated cap. Make a small loop and twist tightly, ensuring not to damage the grounding eye. Connect the free end of this grounding wire to the system ground. Ensure the wire length is sufficient to reach the grounding point and wrap around the insulated cap approximately 10 times (90 inches) during the next installation step.
- Mount the 776BGADDR Insulating Cap
Clean and lubricate the 776BGADDR insulating cap and the 771B20GAD interface with the supplied lubricant. Using two hotsticks, attach the first to the cap's assembly/disassembly bail and push the cap onto the bushing interface. With the second hotstick, engage the prepared grounding wire, establish slight tension, and wrap it loosely around the cap's center. While pushing with the first hotstick, rotate clockwise until threads engage. Continue turning without pushing until resistance is felt. Install with a hotstick only, applying a maximum hand torque of 15 ft/lbs (20.3 Nm). DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Remove the second hotstick.
