How to Install 756LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 756LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for fully shielded, submersible cable connections to high voltage apparatus on 35kV class systems.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
756LR Elbow connector, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug (if applicable), Lubricant, Threaded Stud (if not on mating part), Grounding wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable grounding connector, Silicone lubricant (for test point cap)
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks
De-energize all apparatus in the work area. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts and cable. Ensure all required tools and supplies are at hand, and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Position and Prepare Cable
Position the cable in its final assembled position with enough slack for elbow removal. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24” (610mm). Prepare the cable according to its specific type (e.g., UNISHIELD, JACKETED, NON-JACKETED) by removing the outer jacket and preparing the insulation and semi-con shield to the specified dimensions.
- Install Cable Adapter and Prepare Conductor
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, ensuring the exposed conductor length is between 4-3/8” to 4-3/4” (111mm-121mm).
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it. Measure the "Check Dimension" (must be less than 7” (178mm)) before crimping. Crimp the compression lug following its supplied instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter. Verify the distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter is between 6-7/8” to 7-5/8” (175mm-194mm).
- Install Elbow and Prepare Mating Parts
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further, ensuring the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. Remove the tape marker. DANGER: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (if needed) into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Parts
Push the elbow onto the first mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud. If connecting a second mating part to the opposite end of the elbow, clean and lubricate it, then insert it into the elbow, engage threads, hand tighten, and torque according to its instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug and Ground Cable Shield
If an insulating plug is used, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place it on the elbow, pushing until it snaps into place. Insert one end of a grounding wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a loop. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ground the cable shield according to instructions or an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket to prevent moisture.
- Perform Voltage Test (Optional but Recommended)
CAUTION: For 600amp L-Kits, tighten components to specified torque. To test for voltage, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points. Treat the elbow as energized until a "no voltage" indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it.
