How to Install 756LR/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and connection of 756LR and 776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 35kV class systems, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and mating product connection.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable strippers, Utility knife, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points, Torque wrench (for mating parts)

Supplies needed:

756LR or 776LR Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug (optional), Lubricant, Threaded Stud (from Stud Prepack), Grounding device (e.g., 20MA or 21MA) or alternate grounding method, Grounding wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper), Waterproofing material (for cable jacket), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s), Tape marker

  1. Pre-Installation Safety and Inspection

Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before starting installation. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating components. If supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing or submerging the circuit.

  2. Position and Cut Cable

Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack to allow for elbow removal. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.

  3. Clean Cable Jacket

Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) from the cut end.

  4. Prepare Cable End

Prepare the cable end by removing the outer jacket (if applicable) and stripping the cable insulation and semi-con shield according to the specific cable type (e.g., non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed shield wires, flat metallic tape shield, fabric tape shield, or longitudinally corrugated shield) as detailed in the product's diagrams or specific instructions for grounding devices/cable shield adapters.

  5. Install Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working from the bevel towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  6. Expose Conductor

Carefully remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it flush with the end of the cable adapter, taking care not to nick the cable adapter or the conductor. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4-3/8 inches (111mm) and 4-3/4 inches (121mm). If not, redo the assembly.

  7. Crimp Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping, ensuring it is less than 7 inches (178mm). Crimp the lug according to its supplied instructions. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. After crimping, verify the distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter is between 6-7/8 inches (175mm) and 7-5/8 inches (194mm). If not, redo the assembly.

  8. Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter, pushing until it cannot advance further. Confirm the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.

  9. Prepare and Connect to Mating Product

Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the provided lubricant, ensuring all surfaces remain clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud. DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED.

  10. Connect Opposite Mating Part

Clean and lubricate the mating part intended for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions.

  11. Install Insulating Plug (Optional)

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps into place. This plug provides a means for detecting system voltage.

  12. Ground Cable Shield and Waterproof

Insert one end of a wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper ampacity) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, avoiding damage to the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is properly grounded, either through a dedicated grounding device or an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable.

  13. Perform Voltage Test (Optional)

If the connector has an integral capacitance test point, remove its cap using a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points (following its manufacturer's directions) to determine if the cable is energized. WARNING: Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it.
