Overview

The ABB 756LR-P0360-S is a 35kV, 600A deadbreak elbow connector with an integrated test point, designed for reliable medium-voltage cable connections in electrical distribution systems. This fully shielded, submersible elbow meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 and is rated for 35kV applications with a maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage of 21.1kV and phase-to-phase voltage of 36.6kV. The connector supports cable insulation diameters from 1.725 inches to 1.935 inches and accommodates compressed stranded conductors up to 650 kcmil, compacted solid conductors up to 750 kcmil, or 400 mm² compact conductors. The deadbreak design enables safe, load-break operations without de-energizing the system, while the integrated test point allows voltage verification without disconnecting the cable. The kit includes an insulated plug, cap, stud, aluminum compression lug, and a cold-shrinkable jacket seal for environmental protection and moisture resistance. The fully molded rubber housing is 100% peroxide-cured, ensuring durability and resistance to environmental stress. This product is ideal for underground residential distribution (URD), pad-mounted transformers, switchgear, and other medium-voltage applications where reliable, maintenance-free connections are critical. The 600 Series designation aligns with ABB’s standardized product line for consistent performance and compatibility across installations. The connector is designed for use with metallic tape shield or drain wire cables, with an ECS cable seal grounding device recommended for optimal performance.

How to Install 756LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 756LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 35kV class systems, including cable preparation, component assembly, and grounding procedures.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device

Supplies needed:

756LR Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug (if applicable), Crimp connector, Lubricant, Threaded Stud (if mating part not equipped), Grounding wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper equivalent), Suitable grounding connector, Waterproofing material (for cable jacket)

  1. Ensure Safety and Position Cable

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before installation or removal. Do not touch or move energized products. Position the cable in its final assembled position with enough slack to allow for elbow removal. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.

  2. Clean Cable Outer Jacket

Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) from the cut end.

  3. Prepare Cable End

Follow the specific cable preparation instructions for your cable type (e.g., UNISHIELD, LEAD SHEATH, Jacketed, Non-Jacketed). This typically involves removing the outer jacket (if applicable) and preparing the cable insulation and semi-con shield to specific dimensions as shown in the product's detailed diagrams. Refer to instructions supplied with any grounding devices or cable shield adapters if used.

  4. Install Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  5. Prepare Conductor Length

Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure not to cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length must be between 4-3/8 inches to 4-3/4 inches (111mm-121mm). If not, redo the assembly.

  6. Crimp Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it. Measure the 'Check Dimension' (must be less than 7 inches / 178mm) before crimping. Crimp the compression lug according to the instructions supplied with the lug. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter. After crimping, the distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter should be between 6-7/8 inches to 7-5/8 inches (175mm-194mm). If not, redo the assembly.

  7. Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify the cable adapter is still flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.

  8. Prepare Mating Products for Connection

Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean.

  9. Connect Elbow to Mating Part

Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully lining up the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part. DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED.

  10. Connect Opposite End Mating Part (if applicable)

Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the instructions supplied with that specific mating part.

  11. Install Insulating Plug and Voltage Detection Cap (if used)

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down hard until it snaps into place. CAUTION: The insulating plug provides a means for detecting system voltage; follow voltage test directions carefully.

  12. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a grounding wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow instructions supplied with any grounding device or use an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  13. Perform Voltage Test (Optional but Recommended)

If the connector is equipped with an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick by peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: This is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can give false readings. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
