How to Install 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and connection of 756LR and 776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 35kV class systems. Always ensure all apparatus are de-energized during installation or removal to prevent serious or fatal injury.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
756/776LR Elbow Connector Kit (includes Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Crimp connector, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent), Suitable ground connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s), Waterproofing material
- De-energize and Inspect Apparatus
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.
- Position and Cut Cable
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack to allow for elbow removal. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean Cable Jacket
Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) from the cut end.
- Prepare Cable
Prepare the cable according to its type (e.g., non-jacketed concentric, jacketed shield, flat metallic tape, fabric tape, or longitudinally corrugated shield). Remove the outer jacket and prepare the cable insulation, semi-con shield, and neutral/shield wires to the specified dimensions (10-3/8 inches to 13-5/8 inches from the cut end). Refer to specific instructions for grounding devices or cable shield adapters if used.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length should be between 4-3/8 inches to 4-3/4 inches (111mm-121mm). If not, redo the assembly.
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (should be less than 7 inches / 178mm). Crimp the compression lug following the instructions supplied with the lug. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter. The distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter after crimping should be 6-7/8 inches to 7-5/8 inches (175mm-194mm).
- Install Elbow
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. If not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Products
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into the mating part if it is not already equipped with a stud. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Connect Opposite End of Elbow
Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug (if applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps into place. CAUTION: The insulating plug provides a means for detecting system voltage; follow voltage test directions carefully.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent ampacity) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to instructions supplied with any grounding device, or via an alternate method if no device is used. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test
CAUTION: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination or incorrect equipment can give false readings. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the cap's inside surface with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
