Overview

The ABB 756LR-L0230-S 35kV 600A Deadbreak Elbow with Test Point is a fully shielded, dead-front submersible connector designed for medium-voltage cable systems. This elbow connector accommodates cable insulation diameters from 1.180 inch to 1.465 inch and supports conductor sizes including compressed stranded #1 or compacted solid 1/0. The unit includes an insulated plug, cap, stud, lug, and cable adapter, ensuring a secure and insulated connection. The aluminum compression lug provides reliable conductivity, while the cold-shrinkable jacket seal offers environmental protection and moisture resistance. This deadbreak elbow meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 and is rated for 35kV voltage class with a maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage of 21.1kV and phase-to-phase voltage of 36.6kV. It delivers a 150kV BIL impulse withstand, 50kV AC one-minute withstand, and 103kV DC 15-minute withstand. The connector supports a continuous current rating of 600A and a momentary rating of 25kA symmetric for 10 cycles. The 756LR-L0230-S is ideal for applications requiring safe, load-break operations in medium-voltage distribution systems, including submersible cable connections to high-voltage apparatus. The integrated test point enables voltage verification without disconnecting the elbow, enhancing operational safety and maintenance efficiency. The fully molded rubber housing is 100% peroxide-cured with EPDM materials for durability and environmental resistance. Optional accessories allow for visible external separation, bypass, isolation, dead-ending, grounding, and testing, as well as adding taps, surge arrestors, and fault current indicators. Compatible with metallic tape shield or drain wire cables, this connector is designed for use in medium-voltage systems up to 35kV with conductor ranges from #2 AWG to 1250 kcmil for both aluminum and copper conductors. The cold-shrinkable jacket seal ensures a watertight, corrosion-resistant connection, making it suitable for harsh environments.

How to Install 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and connection of 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 35kV class systems. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cutting tool, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductor), Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points), Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

756/776LR Elbow Connector, Cable adapter, Compression lug, Lubricant (silicone type), Threaded stud, Grounding wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable grounding connector, Insulating plug (if used), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (for shipping cover replacement), Waterproofing material (for cable jacket)

  1. Position and Cut Cable

Position the cable in its final assembled location with enough slack to allow for elbow removal. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.

  2. Clean Cable Outer Jacket

Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm).

  3. Prepare Cable

Follow the specific cable preparation instructions (A, B, or C) that apply to your cable type. Refer to additional instructions for grounding devices, UNISHIELD/LEAD SHEATH cables, or standard jacketed/non-jacketed cables as needed. Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable according to the provided diagrams, ensuring proper dimensions for insulation, semi-con shield, and tape markers.

  4. Install Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  5. Expose Conductor

Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. Verify the length of the exposed conductor is between 4-3/8 inches to 4-3/4 inches (111mm-121mm); if not, redo the assembly.

  6. Crimp Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' (which should be less than 7 inches/178mm) before crimping. Crimp the compression lug following its supplied instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is between 6-7/8 inches to 7-5/8 inches (175mm-194mm) after crimping; if not, redo the assembly.

  7. Install Elbow

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.

  8. Prepare Mating Products

WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part, if the mating part is not already equipped with a stud. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean.

  9. Connect Elbow to Mating Part

Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully lining up the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.

  10. Insert Opposite Mating Part

Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the instructions supplied with that specific mating part.

  11. Install Insulating Plug (If Applicable)

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down hard until it snaps into place. This plug provides a means for detecting system voltage.

  12. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, ensuring not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow instructions supplied with any grounding device or use an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture entry.

  13. Perform Voltage Test (If Applicable)

If the connector is equipped with an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points, following its manufacturer’s directions, to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
