How to Install 755/775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing 755LR/775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for fully shielded, submersible cable connections to high voltage apparatus on 35kV class systems.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Knife or utility blade, Crimping tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Hotstick, Capacitive voltage sensing device, Torque wrench (for L-Kits)
Supplies needed:
755LR/775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit, Insulating plug (if required), Silicone lubricant, Threaded stud (if mating part not equipped), No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent for grounding), Suitable grounding connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Tape marker, Vinyl tape (if applicable for cable type)
- Position Cable and Prepare Neutral Wires
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. If using concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean Cable Outer Jacket
Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24” (610mm).
- Prepare Cable According to Type
Follow the specific cable preparation instructions for your cable type (e.g., UNISHIELD, LEAD SHEATH, Jacketed/Non-Jacketed Concentric Neutral, Jacketed Shield Wires, Jacketed Flat Metallic Tape Shield, Jacketed Fabric Tape Shield, or Jacketed Longitudinally Corrugated Shield). Refer to the relevant instructions for jacket removal, shield connection, and grounding if using a grounding device or cable seal.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Trim Cable Insulation and Verify Conductor Length
Carefully remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure not to cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length must be between 4-3/8” to 4-3/4” (111mm-121mm); if not, redo the assembly.
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug. Measure the “Check Dimension” (must be less than 7” (178mm)) before crimping. Crimp the compression lug according to its supplied instructions. Wipe off all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter. Verify the distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter is between 6-7/8” to 7-5/8” (175mm-194mm) after crimping; if not, redo the assembly.
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Confirm the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Part and Thread Stud
DANGER: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Secure Opposite End of Elbow (if applicable)
If connecting another mating part to the opposite end of the elbow, clean and lubricate its surface. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its supplied instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug (if used)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps into place.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper ampacity) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to the instructions supplied with the grounding device, or via an alternate method if no device is used. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test (Capacitive Test Point)
Use a hotstick to remove the test point cap by peeling it off at an angle, not pulling directly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific meter designed for capacitive test points. Treat the elbow as energized until a “no voltage” indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can cause false readings. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it.
