How to Install 755/775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 755LR and 775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for high voltage apparatus connections and splicing on 35kV class systems.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Measuring tape, Hotstick, Capacitive voltage sensing device, Torque wrench, Cleaning cloths
Supplies needed:
755/775LR Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), High voltage cable, Tape marker, Grounding wire (No. 14 AWG Copper or equivalent), Suitable grounding connector, Cable jacket waterproofing material, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s), Silicone lubricant, Mating apparatus bushing or connector
- Position Cable and Prepare for Cutting
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Position the cable in its final assembled location with enough slack to allow for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean Cable Outer Jacket
Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) from the cut end.
- Prepare Cable for Connection
Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable according to its specific type (e.g., concentric neutral, jacketed shield wires, flat metallic tape shield, fabric tape shield, or longitudinally corrugated shield). Refer to the detailed diagrams and instructions in the product documentation for precise measurements and procedures, especially if using a 20MA or 21MA grounding device, 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, or 10TL cable shield adapter.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Expose Conductor
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4-3/8 inches to 4-3/4 inches (111mm-121mm); if not, redo the assembly.
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (should be less than 7 inches/178mm). Crimp the compression lug following the supplied instructions. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is between 6-7/8 inches to 7-5/8 inches (175mm-194mm) after crimping; if not, redo the assembly.
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Confirm the cable adapter is still flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Products
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Connect Opposite End Mating Part (if applicable)
Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug (if used)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place it on the elbow. Push down firmly until the cap snaps into place.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a grounding wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, being careful not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded according to the instructions supplied with any grounding device, or via an alternate method if no device is used. Waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test
Use the integral capacitance test point to determine if the circuit is energized. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: This is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
