How to Install K656 Deadbreak Receptacles

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing K656CY, K656CH, and K656I Deadbreak Receptacles, including cable preparation, crimping, and final assembly for high-voltage applications.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Hex wrench, Torque wrench with 15/16 inch socket, Wire brush (for aluminum cable), Cable strippers, Utility knife, Beveling tool, Rag, Approved safety solvent, Assembly tool (650ATY or 600RRT)

Supplies needed:

K656 Deadbreak Receptacle housings, Cable adapters, I, Wye, or H Center sections, Aluminum holding collars, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Hex-head bolts, Crimp connectors, Belleville washers, Flat washers, Nylon venting rod, ECS grounding device (optional), No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent), Electrical tape, Conductive copper strip (for flat metallic tape shielded cable)

  1. Prioritize Safety and Inspect Components

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.

  2. Prepare the Cable Outer Jacket

Wipe the cable's outer jacket clean for a distance of 38 inches (96.5 cm). Cut the cable end squarely to ensure maximum available length for crimp growth.

  3. Install Initial Cable Components

If using an ECS grounding device, slide the tube onto the cable for a distance of 38 inches (96.5 cm). Then, slide the receptacle housing onto the cable for a distance of 30 inches (76.2 cm).

  4. Prepare Cable for Adapter Installation

Prepare the cable according to its type (Jacketed Concentric Neutral or Flat Metallic Tape Shielded). This involves removing the outer jacket, bending neutral wires (if applicable), removing the semi-con shield, beveling the insulation, and thoroughly cleaning the insulation with an approved safety solvent. Lubricate the cable and the inside of the cable adapter, then slide the adapter, small end first, over the cable with a twisting motion until it is flush with the tape marker.

  5. Trim Insulation and Install Retaining Ring

Remove any protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or conductor. The exposed conductor should measure 4 3/4” – 5” (12.1 cm – 12.7 cm). Assemble the aluminum retaining ring over the conductor, snugging it firmly against the cable adapter. Tighten the socket head screw hand tight using the provided hex wrench. Confirm the exposed conductor now measures 4 3/8” – 4 3/4” (11.1 cm – 12.1 cm).

  6. Prepare and Insert Conductor into Crimp Connector

Remove the protective cap from the crimp connector. If using aluminum cable, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the crimp connector, which contains inhibitor. Measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; it must be 6 3/4” – 7” (17.1 cm – 17.8 cm). If the distance is over 7”, redo all previous work.

  7. Crimp the Connectors

Crimp the connectors following the instructions packaged with the connectors. Rotate each crimp 90 or 180 degrees. After crimping, re-measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; it must remain 6 3/4” – 7” (17.1 cm – 17.8 cm). If the distance is over 7”, redo all previous work.

  8. Assemble Washers and Bolts

Assemble the washers and hex-head bolt in the following order: flat washer against the spade contact, Belleville washer (concave side down), then the hex-head bolt. Hand tighten all bolts. Do not attempt to move or reposition any part of the assembly after the bolts are tightened.

  9. Torque Tighten Bolts

Using a torque wrench with a 15/16” socket, tighten all bolts to 50 to 60 ft. lbs. (67.8 – 81.3 Nm).

  10. Lubricate and Position Receptacle Housing

Apply the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant generously to the outside of the cable adapter, the splice section, and the inside mating surface of the receptacle housing. Slide the receptacle housing over the cable adapter and up to the edge of the interface. Insert the nylon venting rod (supplied).

  11. Complete Receptacle Housing Assembly

Attach the appropriate assembly tool (650ATY or 600RRT). Slowly operate the tool to slide the receptacle housing completely over the splice section. Remove the venting rod. WARNING: When using the 600RRT tool, do not place hands on the threaded rod or guide shaft.

  12. Perform Final Checks and Grounding

Check all cable adapters to ensure they are properly located and remove any vinyl tape markers. Complete the installation of the ECS grounding device according to its instructions, or connect a short length of No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) to the grounding eyes of the housings and route to ground.

  13. Repeat for Additional Cables

Repeat steps 4 through 12 for all remaining cables to be joined. A complete installation requires repeating these instructions for the total number of cables required (two for 'I', three for 'Y', and four for 'H' connectors).
