How to Install 656CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 656CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and final assembly to high voltage apparatus.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, 600AT or 600ATM assembly tool, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Wire brush, Measuring tape or ruler, Utility knife
Supplies needed:
656CETP Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Lubricant), Cable (appropriate type), Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer (if applicable), Tape marker (if applicable), Ground wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable ground connector, Waterproofing material for cable jacket, Silicone grease, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s), Mating product or apparatus bushing, Bails (for 200A deadbreak connectors)
- Prioritize Safety and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. Verify that all components are undamaged, correctly rated, and compatible with mating parts. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing or submerging the circuit.
- Position and Prepare Cable
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring sufficient slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield
Remove the cable's outer jacket to the specified dimension. Fold back shield wires. Depending on the cable type (e.g., flat metallic tape, fabric tape, longitudinally corrugated, semi-con shield), remove the shield and secure it with vinyl plastic tape, or install tape retainers and markers as indicated in the product documentation. Do not cut or nick the cable insulation during this process. If using UNISHIELD® or lead sheath cable, refer to the 10TL cable shield adapter instructions.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductor
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Carefully remove the protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the exposed conductor length is 4 3/8 to 4 11/16 inches (111mm-119mm). Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or conductor.
- Install and Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it must be less than 6 1/2 inches (165mm). Crimp the compression lug according to the instructions supplied with the lug. After crimping, wipe off all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter surface. The distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter should be 6 1/2 to 7 1/4 inches (165mm-184mm).
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance with the supplied lubricant. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify that the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Product and Install Stud
DANGER: Never connect or disconnect mating products while energized, and do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. Install the stud into the apparatus by hand until it is fully seated. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring all surfaces remain clean.
- Assemble Elbow to Mating Product
Push the elbow onto the mating part. Engage the hex broach of the contact assembly with the appropriate assembly tool (600AT for products dated Sept 30, 2013 or earlier, or 600ATM for products dated Oct 1, 2013 or later). Insert the contact assembly into the elbow interface to engage the stud. For 600AT, torque the contact assembly until the torque limiter ratchets (19 to 25 foot-pounds). For 600ATM, tighten to 50-60 foot-pounds, but DO NOT EXCEED 60 foot-pounds torque.
- Ground the Connector and Waterproof Jacket
Insert one end of a ground wire, with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper, through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop without damaging the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow instructions supplied with any grounding device or use an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Verify Seating and Perform Voltage Test (Optional)
Confirm complete assembly by ensuring no portion of the colored interface sleeve is visible when viewed from the side. For 656CETP, the integral capacitance test point can be used to check if the circuit is energized. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: This is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Contamination or incorrect equipment can cause false readings; always treat the elbow as energized until 'no voltage' is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
