How to Install 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for high voltage apparatus connections and loadbreak taps.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
600AT or 600ATM assembly tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Measuring tape
Supplies needed:
Kit components (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug), Lubricant (supplied), Vinyl plastic tape, Wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable grounding connector, Silicone grease
- Position and Cut Cable
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting any work.
- Clean Cable Outer Surface
Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires.
- Prepare for Grounding Device or Jacket Seal (If Applicable)
If using a 20MA or 21MA grounding device or 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, refer to their specific installation instructions for cable outer jacket removal, shield connection, and grounding. Otherwise, proceed with the following instructions for these procedures.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield
Remove the outer jacket to the specified dimension. Fold back shield wires. For flat metallic tape shield, remove it and secure with vinyl plastic tape. For fabric tape shield, remove it and install a tape retainer and tape marker. For longitudinally corrugated shield, remove it and install a tape marker. For semi-con shield, remove it and install a tape marker, ensuring not to cut or nick the cable insulation. If using UNISHIELD® or lead sheath cable, refer to 10TL cable shield adapter instructions for preparation and grounding.
- Bevel, Clean, Lubricate, and Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation (using supplied lubricant), always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Expose Conductor
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length must be 4 3/8 to 4 11/16 inches (111mm to 119mm). If not, redo the assembly.
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it. Measure the 'Check Dimension' (must be less than 6 1/2 inches / 165mm) before crimping. Crimp the lug following its supplied instructions. Wipe off all excess inhibitor. The distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter after crimping must be 6 1/2 to 7 1/4 inches (165mm to 184mm). If dimensions are incorrect, redo the assembly.
- Lubricate and Install Elbow
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance with the supplied lubricant. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Products and Install Stud
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized, and do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Install the stud into the apparatus by hand until fully seated. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part. For products dated September 30, 2013 or earlier, use the 600AT assembly tool to engage the hex broach and torque the contact assembly until the torque limiter ratchets (19-25 ft/lbs). For products dated October 1, 2013 or later, use the 600ATM assembly tool and tighten to 50-60 ft/lbs torque. DO NOT EXCEED 60 FOOT POUNDS TORQUE.
- Ground Cable Shield
Insert one end of a wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, avoiding damage to the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to the instructions supplied with the grounding device, or via an alternate method if no device is used. Waterproof the cable jacket to prevent moisture entry.
- Install Loadbreak Interface (Optional)
Clean and lubricate the entire loadbreak interface and either a DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR of the appropriate voltage class with the supplied lubricant. Install the DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR to the tap plug interface following their respective instructions.
- Verify Seating and Perform Voltage Test
Verify complete assembly by ensuring no portion of the colored interface sleeve is visible from the side. To test voltage on 656CETP, remove the test point cap with a hotstick (peel off at an angle). WARNING: Use a suitable sensing device for capacitive test points; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the cap's inside surface with silicone grease and replace it.
