How to Install the 656CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 656CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and final connection to mating apparatus. Ensure all safety warnings are observed.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, 600AT or 600ATM assembly tool, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors)
Supplies needed:
656CETP Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Lubricant (supplied), Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer (if applicable), Tape marker, Grounding wire (min. #14 AWG Copper), Suitable grounding connector, Silicone grease, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)
- De-energize Apparatus and Position Cable
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Position the cable in its final assembled position, allowing enough slack for elbow removal. If using concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean Cable Outer Surface
Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires.
- Prepare Cable Shield and Jacket
Remove the cable's outer jacket, shield wires, and any metallic or fabric tape shields according to the specific cable type and dimensions provided in the documentation. If using UNISHIELD® or lead sheath cable, refer to the 10TL cable shield adapter instructions. For semi-con shield, remove it and install a tape marker, ensuring not to cut or nick the cable insulation.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor for Lug
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Be careful not to cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4 3/8 inches and 4 11/16 inches (111mm-119mm); if not, redo the assembly.
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping, ensuring it is less than 6 1/2 inches (165mm). Crimp the compression lug following the instructions supplied with the lug. Wipe off any excess inhibitor after crimping. The distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter after crimping should be 6 1/2 inches to 7 1/4 inches (165mm-184mm); if not, redo the assembly.
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance with the supplied lubricant. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Confirm the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Product
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Install the stud into the apparatus by hand until it is fully seated. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant. Push the elbow onto the mating part. Using the appropriate assembly tool (600AT for products dated Sept 30, 2013 or earlier, torque to 19-25 ft/lbs; 600ATM for products dated Oct 1, 2013 or later, torque to 50-60 ft/lbs, do not exceed 60 ft/lbs), engage the hex broach in the contact assembly and insert it into the elbow interface to engage the stud.
- Ground Cable Shield and Waterproof
Insert one end of a grounding wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to the instructions supplied with any grounding device used, or via an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Verify Seating and Optional Loadbreak Interface Installation
Confirm complete assembly by ensuring no portion of the colored interface sleeve is visible when viewed from the side. If installing a loadbreak interface (DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR), clean and lubricate the entire loadbreak interface and the chosen component with the supplied lubricant. Install the loadbreak component to the tap plug interface following its specific instructions.
- Perform Voltage Test (656CETP Only)
WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device, designed for capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication; always treat the elbow as energized until confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
