How to Install and Remove the ELASTIMOLD 160/167DRG Insulated Cap
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and removal of the ELASTIMOLD 160DRG and 167DRG insulated caps with ground lead on 15kV class loadbreak bushing interfaces.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Insulated hotstick
Supplies needed:
ELASTIMOLD 160DRG/167DRG Insulated Cap with Ground Lead, ELASTIMOLD Approved Lubricant
- Connect Electrostatic Grounding Wire
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Connect the free end of the insulated cap's electrostatic grounding wire to the system ground. Leave sufficient slack for hot-stick operation and ensure the wire is trained not to contact the bushing interface during operation. WARNING: If the ground lead disconnects during operation, do not attempt to reattach without first pulling the insulated cap off the bushing with a hotstick.
- Prepare and Lubricate Insulated Cap
Remove the protective cover from the insulated cap. Apply only the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricants to the cap's internal mating surface. Do not substitute other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the internal mating surface clean and free from dirt and grime. Always replace the protective cover when the cap is not in use.
- Install Insulated Cap onto Loadbreak Bushing
Firmly attach an insulated hotstick to the pulling eye of the insulated cap. Carefully insert the male contact of the insulated cap into the loadbreak bushing. Push the cap home with a fast, firm, and straight motion until it is fully mated and the locking ring is seated. Detach the hotstick from the insulated cap. Ensure all apparatus remains de-energized during this installation.
- Remove Insulated Cap
To remove the insulated cap, first ensure the circuit is de-energized if it's a deadbreak connector, or use appropriate live-line tools for loadbreak. Attach an insulated hotstick to the pulling eye. Before pulling, rotate the insulated cap clockwise slightly while it is in the mated position to break surface friction. Pull the cap off with a fast, firm, straight motion. Finally, remove the electrostatic grounding wire from the system ground and replace the protective cover on the insulated cap to keep its internal surface clean.
