Overview

The ABB 60975 Aluminum Reducing Splice Connector is a high-conductivity wrought aluminum connector engineered to create reliable electrical connections between copper and aluminum conductors of different sizes. This connector features a smaller inner diameter (I.D.) end designed for 400 kcmil copper cable and a larger I.D. end for 600 kcmil aluminum cable, ensuring proper fit and secure contact for both conductor types. Constructed from 6061T-6 aluminum alloy, a material known for its strength and corrosion resistance, the connector is electro-tin plated to enhance electrical conductivity and provide superior protection against oxidation and galvanic corrosion. This plating ensures low contact resistance, which is critical for maintaining efficient power transmission and reducing energy loss in electrical systems. The connector is rated for continuous operation at 90°C, making it suitable for demanding environments where temperature fluctuations are common. The die code 106H and black color code are clearly marked for easy identification during installation and maintenance, reducing the risk of incorrect pairing with other components. With dimensions of 5 5/16 inches (A) by 1 13/32 inches (E), the connector is designed to accommodate standard conductor sizes while providing ample space for proper crimping and securing. The precision-engineered design minimizes installation time by ensuring a straightforward crimping process using the specified die code, which helps maintain consistent performance across installations. This splice connector is ideal for industrial, commercial, and utility applications where secure and efficient wire management is essential, offering long-term operational reliability and reducing the need for frequent maintenance or replacements.

How to Install the 60975 Two-Way Reducing Splicer

Instructions for installing and connecting the 60975 two-way reducing splicer using aluminum or copper cables.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush or emery cloth, Crimping tool (specified in Table 1), Insulating tools (specified in Table 1)

Supplies needed:

ALUMA-SHIELD® Aluminum Joint Compound (if not pre-installed), Shrink tubing or adhesive pad (for insulation)

  1. Prepare the Cable

Strip the insulation from the cable to the length specified in Table 1. Be careful not to nick the cable strands. Smear a thin layer of ALUMA-SHIELD® Aluminum Joint Compound on the cable. Use a wire brush or emery cloth to clean the cable through the compound to remove surface oxide.

  2. Insert Cable into Splicer

WARNING: Do not remove compound from the splice barrel. Remove the protective caps from the ends of the splice barrel. Insert the prepared cable into the connector until it stops. The insertion length should approximate the stripped length of the cable.

  3. Crimp the Connection

CAUTION: Using improper installing dies may result in a malfunctioning connection. Select the correct installing die and the required number of compressions as specified in Table 1. Insert the connector into the die and compress. Start crimping near the center of the connector and work towards the end. Repeat compressions as required.

  4. Finish and Insulate

After crimping, remove any sharp edges, flashes, or burrs from the connection. Insulate the connection using the methods specified in Table 1, such as shrink tubing or an adhesive pad.
