How to Install T&B Liquidtight Flexible Metallic Conduit Connectors

This guide provides detailed instructions for the proper installation of T&B liquidtight connectors, including series like 5365, with flexible metallic conduit. Follow these techniques to ensure high performance and reliable connections in accordance with electrical codes.

Estimated time: 20m

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Power band saw (optional), Smooth jaw wrench (for PVC coated connectors), Torque wrench, Metal jig (optional)

Supplies needed:

T&B Liquidtight connector, Liquidtight flexible metallic conduit, Nylon sealing ring, Safe Edge™ Cone, Gland nut, Locknut, Sealing gasket (for knockout applications), PVC cement (optional)

  1. Prioritize Safety and Prepare Workspace

WARNING: Disconnect all power before beginning installation to prevent risk of shock. Wear hand protection and eye protection. Ensure the installation is performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.

  2. Prepare the Flexible Conduit

Cut the flexible conduit with a clean, square end cut. Use a metal jig, a sharp hacksaw (32 Tooth/ln.), or a power band saw (24-32 Tooth/ln. wavy set, not more than 400’/minute) for high production. Do not use an abrasive wheel.

  3. Assemble the Connector Components

For 5000, 7000, 9000 series, and PVC coated 3300 series connectors, slide the gland nut onto the prepared conduit. Next, slide the nylon sealing ring onto the conduit. Finally, thread the Safe Edge™ Cone onto the conduit end.

  4. Install the Connector into the Knockout Box

Insert the connector body through the knockout hole from the outside of the box. For 5365 to 5370 series, ensure the O-ring is correctly positioned on the outside of the box. For 5361 to 5364 series, ensure the 1-piece sealing ring is correctly positioned. Secure the connector by threading a locknut onto the body from the inside of the knockout box. For 7000 and 9000 series, order the locknut separately. For knockout applications, use T&B® 140 series locknuts and 5260 series sealing gaskets (purchase separately).

  5. Tighten the Gland Nut

Tighten the gland nut onto the connector body to firmly secure the flexible conduit. Refer to the provided torque table for the correct tightening torque based on the fitting's trade size (e.g., 3/8" requires 200 lb.-in., 1/2" requires 300 lb.-in., up to 4" requiring 1600 lb.-in.). For PVC coated connectors, use a smooth jaw wrench. If gouging occurs, exposing metal, apply PVC cement.

  6. Install Chase® Connector Assemblies (Optional)

For 'Space Saver' Chase® connector assemblies, insert only the Chase® Nipple inside the knockout. Achieve lock-up by either tightening the Chase® Nipple to the body or by turning the body onto the Chase® Nipple.
