How to Install Elastimold 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 375LR (without test point) and 376LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD cable.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutter, Cable cut back template, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Cleaning cloths or wipes, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing (375LR or 376LR), Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Grounding connector, UD Cable (concentric neutral, extruded insulation shielding), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- Perform Initial Component Checks and Prepare for Installation
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Before starting, check the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; if encountered, replace damaged components. If the product was supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before proceeding.
- Prepare the Cable for Training
Train the UD cable as shown to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.
- Prepare the Cable End
Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly.
- Install and Crimp the Compression Lug
Immediately install the compression lug onto the wire-brushed conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Finish Cable Insulation Preparation
Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared finish without nicks.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole.
- Install and Tighten the Probe
Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Lubricate and Connect the Elbow to the Bushing
DANGER: Ensure the transformer and elbow are DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
