How to Install 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation of 167RLR and 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cables.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Hotstick, Wrench, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Cutting tool, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground)
- De-energize Apparatus and Remove Livefront Termination
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal. Remove the existing rubber cap from the terminator, cut off the old connector at the top, disconnect the ground lead from the base, and remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare Cable
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, ensuring a square cut and no nicks to the conductor. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches, continue; otherwise, consult your nearest ELASTIMOLD representative.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE). Keep insulation clean and do not introduce excess grease into the gap between the lug and insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant, ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface, applying sufficient force.
