Overview

The ABB 35PCJ1P2400 is a 35kV power cable joint designed for permanent, fully shielded, and fully submersible straight splices in medium-voltage power distribution systems. This single-piece molded rubber housing joint is engineered to join 35kV cables with copper conductors, accommodating cable insulation diameters from 1.725 inches to 1.935 inches and supporting a 1000 AWG solid copper conductor size. The joint meets IEEE Standard 404 for 35kV voltage class, with a 200kV BIL impulse withstand rating, 69kV AC withstand, and 30kV AC corona extinction at 3pC sensitivity. It provides a continuous current rating equal to the cable rating and a short-time current rating up to 35kA. The molded conductive shield ensures a virtually indestructible ground shield for true deadfront construction, while the grounding eye allows easy connection to ground wire. The pin-and-socket interlock design withstands pulls up to 500 lbs, making it suitable for direct burial or vault installations. The cable entrance engages the insulation shielding, eliminating the need for taping. This joint is ideal for new installations or repairs in industrial facilities, utility substations, and other environments requiring reliable medium-voltage power transmission. The single-piece design minimizes leak paths and reduces on-site components, streamlining installation for electricians and technicians.

How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ1 Series Straight Cable Joint

This guide provides detailed instructions for the permanent, fully shielded, and submersible installation of the 15/25/35PCJ1 series straight joint on wire shielded cables. Ensure all safety precautions are followed for high voltage electrical equipment.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Insulation removal tool, Wire-brush, Crimping tool, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV cable ties)

Supplies needed:

Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), User-supplied connector, DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135, for 35kV only), No. 14 AWG copper wire or equivalent (if shield wires are smaller)

  1. De-energize and Inspect Apparatus

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged, and have all required tools at hand.

  2. Prepare Cable Lengths

Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the centerline of the joint. This ensures sufficient length of shield wires for rejoining over the joint.

  3. Remove Cable Jackets and Position Shield Wires

Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires. Cut both cables at the joint centerline.

  4. Prepare Cable 1 Insulation Shield

Taper the edge of Cable 1 at least 1/2 inch (13mm) to no greater than 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield.

  5. Lubricate and Position Joint Housing

Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the housing onto Cable 1 up to the shield wires.

  6. Remove Cable Insulation and Shield

Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both cables according to the dimensions provided in the documentation (e.g., 'X' and 'Y' dimensions for conductor and insulation shield). DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE CABLE INSULATION OR CONDUCTOR.

  7. Install and Crimp Conductor Splice

If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Check the dimension against the 'Max Check Before' table in the documentation; if it exceeds this, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice following the manufacturer's recommendations provided with it.

  8. Clean Splice and Verify Dimensions

Wipe off all excess inhibitor where applicable. Check the distance between cable insulations against the 'Max Check After' table; if it exceeds this, redo the assembly. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs generated during crimping. Ensure all metal chips or filings are removed from the splice and joint assembly area before sliding the joint.

  9. Prepare Cables for Housing Placement

Clean the cables where indicated in the diagram. Lubricate in the direction of the arrows to create a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.

  10. Slide Housing into Final Position

Slide the joint housing into its final position. Ensure proper positioning by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield.

  11. Install Cable Ties (35kV Only)

For 35kV installations ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135) on each end of the cable entrance. Install the outer ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the edge of the splice, then install the second ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the first, with an offset of the locking heads. Use the T&B WT3D tool (not included) to tighten and trim the ties.

  12. Prepare Grounding and Secure Shield Wires

Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye (for 35kV ONLY). Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint as shown in the diagram.

  13. Connect Joint Grounding Wires

Insert one of the shield wires from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye. Repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate user-supplied connector.

  14. Reconstruct Cable Jacket

Reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and the joint housing to complete the installation.
