How to Install the 35PCJ1 Straight Joint

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the permanent installation of the 35PCJ1 straight joint, designed for wire shielded cables with aluminum or copper conductors. Ensure all safety precautions are followed for high voltage equipment.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Utility knife, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Cable tie tool (e.g., T&B WT3D), Measuring tape or ruler

Supplies needed:

Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Connector (for conductor, user supplied), Deltec Cable ties TYD5135 (for 35kV installations only), #14 AWG copper wire (if shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG), Appropriate connector (for grounding wires), Cable 1 (to be joined), Cable 2 (to be joined)

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Verify that all components of the 35PCJ1 joint housing, splice, and lubricant are present, undamaged, and compatible with your cables. Read the entire installation instructions thoroughly before proceeding.

  2. Prepare Cables for Joint Centerline

Overlap both Cable 1 and Cable 2, then cut them to a length of 12 inches (305mm) from the intended joint centerline. This ensures sufficient shield wire length for later steps. Remove the cable jacket from Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and from Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm) from the centerline. Carefully fold back the shield wires on both cables. Finally, cut both cables precisely at the joint centerline.

  3. Prepare Cable Insulation and Store Housing

On Cable 1, taper the edge of the cable insulation from 1/2 inch (13mm) to 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield of Cable 1, and lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the joint housing onto Cable 1, pushing it back past the shield wires for temporary storage. Next, carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both Cable 1 and Cable 2 according to the dimensions 'X' and 'Y' provided in the documentation for your specific conductor size. Exercise extreme caution to avoid cutting or nicking the cable insulation or conductor.

  4. Install the Conductor Splice

If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly before immediately inserting them into the splice. Ensure the conductors are fully seated and check the 'Max Check Before' dimension from the documentation. Crimp the splice according to the manufacturer's recommendations provided with the splice. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Verify the distance between the cable insulations against the 'Max Check After' dimension; if it exceeds this, redo the assembly. Carefully remove any sharp protrusions or burrs created during crimping and ensure all metal chips/filings are removed from the splice and surrounding area. Clean the cables where indicated and apply lubricant in the direction of the arrows to create a ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.

  5. Complete Joint Assembly and Grounding

Slide the joint housing from its stored position into its final central position over the splice. Ensure proper positioning by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. For 35kV installations ONLY: Install two DELTEC Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the edge of the splice and 1/4 inch (6mm) from the first tie, with offset locking heads. Use a T&B WT3D tool or equivalent to tighten and trim the ties. Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye. Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint as shown in the diagrams. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, and repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and the remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Finally, reconstruct the cable jacket (if applicable) over both cables and the joint housing.
