How to Install the 35PCJ1L2270 Cable Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 35PCJ1L2270 permanent, fully shielded, and submersible cable joint. It covers cable preparation, splice installation, and final assembly for high-voltage electrical systems.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Utility knife, Wire-brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV only, for Deltect ties)
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Connector (user supplied, for grounding wires), Deltect Cable ties (TYD5135, for 35kV only), #14 AWG Copper wire or equivalent (if shield wires are small), Cleaning supplies
- Prepare Cables and Ensure Safety
De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation. Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the center line of the joint. Remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm) where applicable. Fold back the shield wires and then cut both cables at the joint's center line.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Temporarily Store Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1's insulation shield from 1/2 inch (13mm) to 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the housing onto Cable 1, pushing it up to the shield wires for temporary storage.
- Prepare Cables for Splice Installation
Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both Cable 1 and Cable 2 according to the specified dimensions for conductor 'X' and 'Y' based on MCM size. Exercise extreme caution to avoid cutting or nicking the cable insulation or conductor during this process.
- Install and Crimp the Splice
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them and immediately insert into the splice. Verify the dimension against the 'Max Check Before' table; if it exceeds, redo assembly. Crimp the splice per recommendations. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Check distance between cable insulations against 'Max Check After' table; if it exceeds, redo assembly. Remove sharp protrusions/burrs and metal chips. Clean cables where indicated and lubricate to create a build-up at the insulation shield edge.
- Complete Joint Assembly and Grounding
Slide the joint housing into its final position, equalizing deformation of joint ends. For 35kV only, install two DELTEC Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance (1/4 inch from splice edge, 1/4 inch from first tie with offset heads) using a T&B WT3D tool. Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye. Retrain shield wires and secure to joint ends. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, repeat for Cable 2. If smaller, use #14 AWG copper wire. Connect grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Reconstruct cable jacket over both cables and joint housing.
