Special Features | Power Cable Joints utilize permanently crimped connectors. PCJ housings are fully insulated, shielded and sealed for direct-burial, vault, submersible and other servere service applications. Units have been designed and tested per IEEE Standard 404 to ensure system matched performance and ratings equal to the cable to which the splice will be installed. Power Cable Joints are available in two styles. Style 1 uses a single-piece housing that is sized to accommodate a specific range of cable - ideally suited to straight splicing of the same or similar cable. Style 2 designs incorporate a universal housing with separate cable adapters to allow transition splices of different types and sizes of cable |

How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ2WXXXX-RC Straight Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the permanent, fully shielded, and fully submersible installation of the 15/25/35PCJ2WXXXX-RC straight joint for aluminum and/or copper conductor, wire shielded cables.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Stripping guide, Hex wrench, Wirebrush, Crimping tool, Cable preparation tool (e.g., utility knife), Multimeter
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Cable Adapters, Lubricant, Retaining Collars, Hose Clamp, Electrical Tape, Appropriate connector (for grounding), #14 AWG copper wire (if needed for grounding), Heat/cold shrink materials (for jacket reconstruction)
- Prepare Cables and Install Joint Housing
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Verify with a multimeter. Carefully remove 11-1/4 inches (285.7mm) of cable jacket from both cables. Fold back shield wires and tape their ends on Cable 1. Clean the insulation shield, shield wires, and jacket for a distance of 30 inches (760mm). Slide the joint housing onto Cable 1 to a distance of 30 inches (760mm). Using a stripping guide, carefully remove the insulation shield and cable insulation, ensuring not to cut or nick the underlying insulation. Wrap two turns of tape 1 inch (25mm) from the edge of the insulation shield on both cables as a marker. Clean the cable insulation and apply lubricant to create a build-up or ramp at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Install Cable Adapters and Retaining Collars
Lubricate the inside of both ends of one cable adapter. Install the cable adapter onto Cable 1 until it meets the tape marker. Repeat this process immediately for Cable 2. Select a retaining collar and partially thread its proper size setscrews. Position the retaining collar over the insulation, flush against the cable adapter. Using the supplied hex wrench, tighten each setscrew only one or two turns at a time to keep the collar centered over the insulation. Continue to tighten the setscrews until they are below the surface of the collar. Repeat for Cable 2.
- Splice Conductors and Position Joint Housing
Thoroughly clean the ends of the cable adapters and the cable where shown. Install the hose clamp around the adapter on the opposite side of the splice from where the housing is stored, then tape over the hose clamp to form a smooth surface. Wirebrush the exposed conductors of both cables and immediately insert them into the splice. Be sure the 'Check' dimension does not exceed 8-1/2 inches (215mm); otherwise, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice following the recommendations provided with it. Wipe off all excess inhibitor, then check the distance between cable adapters. If it exceeds 8-3/4 inches (222mm), redo the assembly. Clean and lubricate the outside surface of the cable adapters before sliding the housing into its final position.
- Complete Joint Assembly and Grounding
Slide the joint housing into its final position, centering it over the cable adapters. Remove all tape, ensuring that cable and adapter insulation are not exposed after positioning the joint. Reshape the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint as shown in the documentation. Insert one of the shield wires from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye. Repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector (user supplied). Reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and also over the joint housing using heat/cold shrink materials (not included in this kit).
