What material are PCJ cable joints made from?
Elastimold PCJ power cable joints feature permanently crimped connectors inside EPDM rubber housings.
What are the two styles of PCJ power cable joints?
Style 1 is for straight splicing of two similar cables. Style 2 allows for transition splicing between different cable sizes.
What type of connector is included in the N1 kit?
The N1 kit includes an aluminum compression connector suitable for splicing aluminum to aluminum or aluminum to copper conductors.
What is the short-time current rating for PCJ joints?
The short-time current rating for PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating, up to 35 kA.
What is the continuous current rating for PCJ joints?
The continuous current rating for PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating.
What safety standards do PCJ joints meet?
The shield design meets IEEE 592 standard, and connectors meet ANSI 119.4 Class A and Class 3 ratings.
Is taping required for PCJ joint cable entrances?
No, the cable entrance engages the insulation shielding of the cable, eliminating the need for taping.
What conductor materials are compatible with PCJ joints?
PCJ power cable joints are compatible with both copper and aluminum conductors.
What voltage classes are available for PCJ joints?
PCJ power cable joints are available in 15 kV, 25 kV, and 35 kV classes.

How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ1 Straight Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 15/25/35PCJ1 straight joint for wire shielded cables, designed for permanent, fully shielded, and submersible applications.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable stripping tools, Wire brush, Crimping tool, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV only)
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Appropriate connector (for grounding wires), DELTECt Cable ties (for 35kV only), #14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent, if needed), Cable jacket repair material (if applicable)
- Ensure Safety and Prepare Workspace
De-energize all apparatus in the work area. Inspect package contents and all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.
- Prepare Cables for Jointing
Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the joint centerline. Remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires and cut both cables at the joint centerline.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Position Joint Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1 insulation from 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inches (13mm to 38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the housing onto Cable 1 up to the shield wires.
- Prepare Cables for Splice
Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both Cable 1 and Cable 2 according to the specified dimensions ("X" and "Y" from the table). Ensure not to cut or nick the cable insulation or conductor during this process.
- Install and Crimp the Splice
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them immediately before insertion into the splice. Insert conductors into the splice and crimp it according to the splice manufacturer's recommendations. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Verify the distance between cable insulations against the "Max Check After" dimension in the table; redo assembly if it exceeds. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs from the crimped splice and clean the splice and joint assembly area. Clean and lubricate the cables where indicated, building up lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Finalize Joint Assembly and Grounding
Slide the joint housing into its final position, ensuring proper placement by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. For 35kV installations only, install two DELTECt Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance as specified, using a T&B WT3D tool if available, and remove the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye. Retrain shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, repeating for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Reconstruct the cable jacket over both cables and the joint housing where applicable.
