Overview

This component serves as the apparatus bushing interface for connecting shielded cable to critical infrastructure, including sub-surface transformers, pad-mounted transformers, generators, regulators, switchgear, and reclosers. The 2701A4 meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 requirements with a 15.2kV maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage, 26.3kV phase-to-phase, and a 125kV BIL impulse withstand rating (1.2 x 50 microsecond wave). It supports continuous and loadbreak operation at 200 Amps, with a 10kA symmetrical momentary and fault close rating for 10 cycles. The insert features a blue PBT interface shield that reduces sticking, provides a seating indicator, and visually confirms the 25kV class. A built-in vent prevents partial vacuum flashover during operation. Installation requires the 200AT Assembly Tool for secure torquing via the included hex-broach feature. The peroxide-cured insulation and jacket ensure long-term reliability, while a provision for ground wire connection enhances safety. Measuring 8.93 inches in length with a 2.9-inch widest diameter, the 2701A4 is designed for precise fitment in standard electrical enclosures. Each kit includes the bushing insert, protective shipping cap (2701-41), lubricant (82-08), and installation instructions (IS-1162).

How to Install the 2701A4 Loadbreak Bushing Insert

This guide provides essential instructions for the safe and correct installation of the 2701A4 Loadbreak Bushing Insert, designed for 25kV class loadbreak connections. Follow these steps for proper preparation, installation, and grounding.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

200AT assembly tool (optional), Suitable rod (if using 200AT)

Supplies needed:

2701A4 Loadbreak Bushing Insert, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), No. 14 AWG (2,5mm2) copper wire or equivalent, Suitable connector for system ground, Mating electrical connector or insulated cap (for subsequent connection)

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. Inspect the apparatus bushing well to ensure it is dry and free from all contaminants. Verify the contents of the package are complete and undamaged, and check all components for proper fit and compatibility with mating parts.

  2. Prepare and Lubricate the Bushing Insert

Remove the protective shipping cover from the bushing insert. Lubricate the bushing well interface area of the bushing insert thoroughly with the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricants. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to this product and its mating products.

  3. Install and Tighten the Bushing Insert

Place the lubricated portion of the bushing insert into the apparatus bushing well. Hand tighten the bushing insert in a clockwise direction until it bottoms. Alternatively, if using a 200AT assembly tool, insert it into the bore until fully seated, then insert a suitable rod through the eye of the tool and turn clockwise until it ratchets, indicating proper assembly torque. CAUTION: Use only hand tightening or the 200AT tool to avoid damaging the bushing insert. Remove the 200AT tool after tightening.

  4. Ground the Bushing Insert

Push a length of No. 14 AWG (2,5mm2) copper wire or equivalent through one of the grounding tabs on the bushing insert. Form a small loop and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the grounding tab. Connect the free end of this electrostatic grounding wire to the system ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the grounding wire does not contact the bushing interface, adjacent interfaces, or interfere with nearby parking stands.

  5. Prepare for Mating Product or Cover

Thoroughly wipe the bushing interface clean of any contaminants and lubricate it with the supplied lubricant. Install the mating electrical connector or insulated cap according to its specific instructions. If a mating product is not immediately installed, replace the protective shipping cover. WARNING: Do not energize or submerge the apparatus with only the shipping cover on the bushing insert, as it is not insulated or watertight.

  6. Verify Complete Seating

After installing an insulated cap or elbow, verify complete assembly by ensuring no portion of the blue interface sleeve is visible when viewed from the side.
