How to Install 261LRJS and 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 261LRJS (without test point) and 262LRJS (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal. It covers cable preparation, elbow assembly, and initial connection to a bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for 262LRJS test point)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Sealing Strips (3 supplied), Mastic, Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for grounding)

  1. De-energize and Inspect Apparatus

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators that can be installed and operated energized. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.

  2. Perform Pre-Installation Checks

Check the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for free movement; if resistance is encountered prior to full assembly, check for damage and replace damaged components. Read the entire installation instructions before starting and have all required tools at hand, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  3. Train Cable for Operation

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. To facilitate connection of the neutral to the tank ground and hotstick operation, pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the centerline of the bushing and place a tape mark at the centerline. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.

  4. Prepare Cable Jacket and Neutral Wires

Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the neutral wires imbedded into the first mastic strip. Use the third strip of mastic, if needed, to build up the outer diameter in the area of the first mastic location. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape.

  5. Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductor

Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end according to the cable cut-back template, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template. Bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  6. Assemble Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the lubricant supplied; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Other lubricants may be harmful to this product or its mating product(s). Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole.

  7. Install Probe

Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  8. Connect Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack in wires for elbow operation.

  9. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Operate the connection using a full insulated “hotstick” type live-line tool; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Consult the utility’s safe work practices for the required live-line tool length.

  10. Perform Voltage Test (262LRJS only)

If using a 262LRJS connector equipped with an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the “no voltage” test point indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can provide a false reading. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
