How to Install K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and connection to high voltage apparatus.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Hotstick, Suitable capacitive voltage sensing device, Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent) for grounding, Suitable ground connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone lubricant, Tape marker, Waterproofing material (for cable jacket)

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Prepare Cable

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Assemble the cable in its final position with enough slack. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24” (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing.

  2. Prepare Cable Insulation and Install Adapter

Prepare the cable by removing the outer jacket and semi-con shield according to the specific cable type and dimensions provided in the product documentation. Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  3. Prepare Conductor and Install Compression Lug

Remove any protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, being careful not to cut or nick the adapter or conductor. The exposed conductor length must be between 4-1/4” to 4-9/16” (108mm-116mm). For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (must be less than 6-3/8”). Crimp the compression lug according to its supplied instructions. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. The distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter after crimping should be 6-3/8” to 7-1/8” (162mm-181mm).

  4. Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify that the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.

  5. Connect Elbow to Mating Apparatus

DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized, and do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.

  6. Connect Second Mating Part and Torque

If connecting a second mating part to the opposite end of the elbow, clean and lubricate its surface. Insert the mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions. CAUTION: When constructing 600-amp L-Kits, ensure each component is tightened to the specified torque.

  7. Install Insulating Plug (if applicable) and Ground Cable

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place it on the elbow, pushing until it snaps into place. Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent) through the grounding eye, twist to form a small loop, and connect it to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded as per instructions for the grounding device or an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket to prevent moisture ingress.

  8. Perform Voltage Test

WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
