How to Install Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector on UD cable, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a deadbreak bushing. Always ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation to prevent serious injury or death.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Fully insulated hot stick, Wire strippers, Suitable capacitance sensing device
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (supplied with product), Hold-down Bail, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm Copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector, Elastimold 25kV class 200 ampere deadbreak bushing or accessory device, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s), Silicone grease
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Inspection
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Check the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size for proper fit with the cable. Verify probe threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.
- Train the Cable
Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation to ease operation. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable.
- Prepare the Cable
Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield as shown, then bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Assemble the Hold-down Bail
Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket. Compress the bail and insert it securely into the brackets.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, then lubricate them with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED.
- Secure the Elbow with the Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not need readjustment when removing and replacing the elbow.
- Perform Voltage Test (Optional)
If equipped with an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hot stick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can provide false readings. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
