How to Install 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, designed to terminate UD cable with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool (for compression lug), Fully insulated hot stick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points, Cable cut back template
Supplies needed:
252LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug (appropriate size for cable), Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (supplied with connector), Hold-down Bail, UD cable (concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for grounding, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Elastimold 25kV class 200 ampere deadbreak bushing or accessory device
- Perform Safety Checks and Initial Inspection
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating components. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size match your cable. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap.
- Train and Cut Cable
Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation to facilitate future operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.
- Prepare Cable End
Using a cable cut back template for dimensional guidance, unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the cable end. Carefully remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off any excessive inhibitor. Remove the semi-con shield as shown, then bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble Elbow Housing
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Assemble Hold-Down Bail
Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket. Compress the bail and insert it securely into the brackets.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DANGER: DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED.
- Secure Elbow with Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not require readjustment when removing and replacing the elbow.
- Perform Voltage Test (Post-Installation Check)
To test if the circuit is energized, remove the test point cap with a hot stick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points. Contamination, moisture, or incorrect equipment can cause a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
