Overview

The ABB 160DRGA-5(3) is a 15kV, 200 Amp loadbreak insulated cap with an integrated ground lead, designed for medium-voltage electrical distribution systems. This fully shielded, fully submersible connector is hot stick operable and separable, enabling safe energized operation on 15kV class loadbreak systems. The molded EPDM rubber construction ensures dielectric integrity, while the integral #14 AWG ground lead provides system grounding and fault current management. This model is supplied without a probe, making it ideal for dead-end applications on compatible Elastimold mating products such as 1601A4 bushing inserts, 164FT feed thru, 1602A3R feed-thru inserts, and 164 series junctions. Key electrical ratings include 8.3kV phase-to-ground and 14.4kV phase-to-phase operating voltage, 95kV BIL impulse withstand, 34kV AC one-minute withstand, and 53kV DC 15-minute withstand. The connector supports 200 Amp continuous and loadbreak current with 10kA symmetrical momentary and fault close capability. Its design prioritizes electrical isolation, safety, and reliable termination in medium-voltage distribution environments.

How to Install the 160DRG/167DRG Insulated Cap with Ground Lead

This guide provides instructions for installing the 160DRG and 167DRG insulated caps with ground leads. These caps are designed for insulating, shielding, and watersealing 15kV class loadbreak bushing interfaces.

Estimated time: 20m

Tools needed:

Hotstick

Supplies needed:

160DRG/167DRG Insulated Cap with Ground Lead, Lubricant

  1. Connect Electrostatic Grounding Wire

Connect the free end of the electrostatic grounding wire to the system ground. Ensure enough slack is left for hot-stick operation of the insulated cap. CAUTION: Train the electrostatic grounding wire so it does not contact the bushing interface during operation. WARNING: If the ground lead disconnects during operation, do not attempt to reattach without first pulling the insulated cap off the bushing with the hotstick.

  2. Prepare and Lubricate the Insulated Cap

Remove the protective cover from the insulated cap. Lubricate the cap's internal mating surface using only the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricants. Do not substitute other lubricants as they may be harmful. Keep the internal mating surface free from dirt and grime. Always replace the protective cover when not in use.

  3. Attach Insulated Cap to Loadbreak Bushing

Firmly attach a hotstick to the insulated cap's pulling eye. Insert the male contact of the insulated cap into the loadbreak bushing, and push it home with a fast, firm, straight motion. Verify that it is fully mated, with the locking ring seated. Detach the hotstick from the insulated cap.
