This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, crimping the conductor contact, and connecting the Elastimold 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle to a mating product or apparatus. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tool, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag, Approved solvent
Supplies needed:
151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, Conductor Contact (male), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied with product), Solid dielectric type cable, Inhibitor (for aluminum conductors), Elastimold bail, Silicone grease, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent), Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP, optional)
- Prepare the Cable Jacket and Shield
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation. Cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end for jacketed concentric neutral cables, or 7 1/2 inches for copper tape shield cables. For copper tape shield, remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the cable end. Allow sufficient concentric neutral wires for connecting to the ground point as required.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Terminal
Remove 7/8 to 1 inch (or 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 inches for #1 and #1/0 stranded/compressed aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel which contains inhibitor. Cut the conductor squarely, do not pencil. Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, ensuring the conductor remains fully seated. Start crimps at the crimp line and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation if using aluminum cable.
- Clean Insulation and Lubricate Receptacle
Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7 9/16 to 7 5/8 inches back from the end of the pin with a straight, smooth, 'squared' cut, ensuring not to cut or nick the insulation. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue by wiping with a rag wet with an approved solvent, always wiping from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing; do not substitute lubricants.
- Insert Cable into Receptacle Housing
Push the prepared cable into the receptacle housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. IMPORTANT: If the receptacle is not to be immediately connected, replace the protective cover with an Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP) as the shipping cover offers protection from dirt only and is not an insulating device.
- Connect to a Mating Plug
Lubricate the nose of the mating plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon venting rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1 3/4 inches), taking care to ensure the nylon rod is not cut. Insert the mating plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with the aid of an Elastimold bail. CAUTION: A bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.
- Ground the Cable
If an Elastimold grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly as shown. Then, connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
