How to Install the 15PCJ2M1380 Straight Joint

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the permanent, fully shielded, and submersible installation of the 15PCJ2M1380 straight joint for aluminum and/or copper conductor, wire shielded cables. Ensure all safety precautions are followed for high voltage equipment.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Stripping guide, Circular cutting tool or glass scraper, Hex wrench, Wirebrush, Crimping tool

Supplies needed:

Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Cable Adapters, Lubricant, Retaining Collars, Hose Clamp, Electrical tape, Appropriate connector for grounding, #14 AWG copper wire (if needed), Cable jacket reconstruction material (e.g., heat/cold shrink)

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components

DANGER: Before beginning, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify that both cable ends are free from moisture and contaminants. Remove any graphite coatings 12 inches (30.5 cm) beyond the cable jacket cut using a circular cutting tool or by scraping with glass; avoid sanding. If strand-filled or water-blocking material is present, consult the cable manufacturer for welding/crimping procedures.

  2. Prepare Cable 1 and Position Joint Housing

Using the stripping guide, carefully remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 (when applicable) for a distance of 11-1/4 inches (285.7 mm). Fold back the shield wires and tape the ends of these wires to the jacket, allowing enough extra length for later rejoining over the joint. Clean the surface of the insulation shield, shield wires, and jacket for a distance of 30 inches (760 mm). Slide the joint housing onto Cable 1 to a distance of 30 inches (760 mm).

  3. Strip and Lubricate Cable Insulation

Using the stripping guide, carefully remove the insulation shield and cable insulation from both cables. DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE INSULATION, as this could lead to assembly failure. Wrap two turns of electrical tape 1 inch (25 mm) from the edge of the insulation shield on both cables to serve as a marker. Clean the cable insulation thoroughly, then apply lubricant to provide a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.

  4. Attach Cable Adapters

Take one cable adapter and lubricate the inside of both ends. Install this cable adapter onto Cable 1 until it meets the tape marker. Repeat this process for the other cable adapter on Cable 2.

  5. Secure Retaining Collars

Select a retaining collar and partially thread the appropriate size setscrews (refer to instructions packaged with the collars). Position the retaining collar over the insulation, flush against the cable adapter. Using the supplied hex wrench, tighten each set screw only one or two turns at a time to ensure the collar remains centered over the insulation. Continue tightening the set screws until they are below the surface of the collar. Repeat this procedure for Cable 2.

  6. Crimp and Prepare Splice

Thoroughly clean the ends of both cable adapters and the exposed cable areas. Install a hose clamp around the adapter on the opposite side of the splice from where the housing is stored to hold the adapter in place during final assembly. Tape over the hose clamp to create a smooth surface. Wirebrush the exposed conductors of both cables and immediately insert them into the splice. Verify that the 'Check' dimension between the cable adapters does not exceed 8-1/2 inches (215 mm); if it does, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Wipe off any excess inhibitor and re-check the distance between cable adapters. If it exceeds 8-3/4 inches (222 mm), redo the assembly. Clean and lubricate the outside surface of the cable adapters before sliding the housing into its final position.

  7. Finalize Joint Assembly and Grounding

Slide the joint housing into its final position, ensuring it is centered over the cable adapters. Remove all temporary tape. Verify that no cable or adapter insulation is exposed after positioning the joint. Reshape the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye; repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and the remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Finally, reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and over the joint housing using heat/cold shrink or other suitable material (not included in the kit).
