What are Elastimold PCJ power cable joints used for?
They are used for straight splicing of two similar cables or transition splicing of different cable sizes up to 1250 kcmil. They provide a permanent, fully shielded, fully submersible splice.
What is the corona extinction voltage for a 25 kV PCJ joint?
For a 25 kV class PCJ joint, the corona extinction voltage (3 pC sensitivity) is 22 kV.
What is the BIL impulse withstand for a 15 kV PCJ joint?
For a 15 kV class PCJ joint, the BIL impulse withstand (1.2 x 50 μsec. wave) is 110 kV.
Can aluminum connectors be used for copper-to-copper splices?
No, an all-copper connector is required for copper-to-copper connections. Aluminum compression connectors are for aluminum-to-aluminum or aluminum-to-copper.
Can copper connectors be used on aluminum conductors?
No, copper compression connectors are suitable for splicing copper conductors to copper conductors only. They should not be used on aluminum conductors.
What is the continuous current rating of PCJ power cable joints?
The continuous current rating of PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating.
What is the short-time current rating of PCJ joints?
The short-time current rating of PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating, up to 35 kA.
What safety standards do PCJ power cable joints meet?
The shield design meets IEEE 592 standard. The connectors meet ANSI 119.4 Class A and Class 3 ratings.
What is the pull force rating for PCJ joint interlocks?
The pin-and-socket interlock of the PCJ power cable joint is designed to withstand a pull force of up to 500 lb.
What are the two styles of PCJ power cable joints?
Style 1 is for straight splicing of two similar cables. Style 2 includes separate cable adapters for transition splicing between two different cable sizes.
How to Install the 15PCJ2L1380 Straight Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 15PCJ2L1380 permanent, fully shielded, and submersible straight joint for aluminum and/or copper conductor, wire shielded cables.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Circular cutting tool, Glass scraper, Wirebrush, Crimping tool, Hex wrench, Multimeter
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Cable Adapters, Lubricant, Retaining Collars, Hose Clamp, Electrical tape, Appropriate connector (user supplied), #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent, Heat/cold shrink materials
- Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Verify the circuit is de-energized using appropriate safety procedures and equipment. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices. Inspect all components for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Examine the mating cable ends; both cables should be free from moisture and other contaminants. Remove graphite coatings 12 inches (30.5cm) beyond the cable jacket cut using a circular cutting tool or by scraping with glass. Avoid sanding. If strand filled or water-blocking material is present in the conductor(s), contact the cable manufacturer for welding/crimping procedures.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Install Joint Housing
Using the stripping guide, carefully remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 for a distance of 11-1/4 inches (285.7mm). Fold back the shield wires and tape the end of the wires on Cable 1 to the jacket, allowing enough extra length to rejoin over the joint later. Clean the surface of the insulation shield, shield wires, and jacket for a distance of 30 inches (760mm). Slide the joint housing onto Cable 1 to a distance of 30 inches (760mm).
- Prepare Cable Insulation
Using the stripping guide, carefully remove the insulation shield and cable insulation from both cables. DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE INSULATION, as this could lead to assembly failure. Wrap two turns of tape 1 inch (25mm) from the edge of the insulation shield as a marker on both cables. Clean the cable insulation, then lubricate it to create a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Install Cable Adapters
Take one cable adapter and lubricate the inside of both ends. Install the cable adapter onto Cable 1 until it meets the tape marker. Repeat this process for the other cable adapter on Cable 2.
- Install Retaining Collars
Select the appropriate retaining collar and partially thread the correct size setscrews (refer to instructions packaged with the collars). Position the retaining collar over the insulation, flush against the cable adapter on Cable 1. Using the supplied hex wrench, tighten each setscrew one or two turns at a time to keep the collar centered over the insulation. Continue tightening until the setscrews are below the surface of the collar. Repeat this process for Cable 2.
- Install the Splice
Thoroughly clean the ends of the cable adapters and the cable where shown. Install a hose clamp around the adapter on the opposite side of the splice from where the housing is stored, to hold the adapter in place during final assembly. Tape over the hose clamp to form a smooth surface. Wirebrush the exposed conductors of both cables and immediately insert them into the splice. Ensure the 'Check' dimension does not exceed 8-1/2 inches (215mm); if it does, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice following the recommendations provided with it. Wipe off all excess inhibitor, then check the distance between the cable adapters. If it exceeds 8-3/4 inches (222mm), redo the assembly. Clean and lubricate the outside surface of the cable adapters before sliding the housing into its final position.
- Complete Joint Assembly and Grounding
Slide the joint housing into its final position, centering it over the cable adapters. Remove all tape. Ensure that cable and adapter insulation are not exposed after positioning the joint. Reshape the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint. Insert one of the shield wires from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye. Repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector (user supplied). Reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and also over the joint housing using heat/cold shrink materials (not included in the kit).
