How to Install the 10TL Adapter for Flat Metallic Tape Shielded Cable

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 10TL adapter on cables with flat metallic tape insulation shields, designed for use with ELASTIMOLD distribution products. It covers cable preparation, adapter installation, and grounding procedures.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Knife, Rag, Soldering iron

Supplies needed:

Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Approved safety solvent, 3/4 inch (19mm) wide PVC insulating electrical tape, Vinyl plastic electrical tape, #14 AWG (2.08mm²) wire, Grounding lead, Solder, Electrical insulating tape

  1. Ensure Safety and Prepare for Installation

Before beginning, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Read these instructions and the ELASTIMOLD product instructions completely. Have all required tools and supplies at hand, and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Adapter

Refer to the ELASTIMOLD product instructions for the semiconductive shield removal dimension (normally specified in or near Step 2 of those instructions). Remove the outer jacket a distance of 2 inches (51mm) more than this specified dimension. Next, remove the metallic tape to a point 3/4 inch (19mm) from the edge of the outer jacket. Then, remove the semiconducting tape to a point 1 inch (25mm) from the edge of the outer jacket. Wrap 1-1/2 to 2 turns of 3/4 inch (19mm) wide PVC insulating electrical tape over the semiconducting and metallic tapes, 1/2 inch (13mm) from the outer jacket edge, to serve as a tape retainer. Wrap 2 turns of vinyl plastic electrical tape over the outer jacket, 1 inch (25mm) from its edge, to serve as a tape marker.

  3. Clean Cable, Lubricate, and Mount Adapter

Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semiconducting residue. This may be done by wiping with a rag soaked with an approved safety solvent. Always wipe from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. Lubricate the cable as shown in the product diagram and the inside of the adapter. Slide the adapter onto the cable with a forward side-to-side twisting motion until it is flush with the tape marker. The step on the adapter serves as a marker for assembling ELASTIMOLD products on the cable.

  4. Install ELASTIMOLD Product and Ground Metallic Shield

Install the ELASTIMOLD product by following the installation instructions supplied with that product. After installation, a 1/8 inch (3mm) maximum gap between the ELASTIMOLD product and the step on the adapter is permissible. Remove the tape marker from the cable after assembly of the ELASTIMOLD product. Approximately 2 inches (51mm) back from the end of the adapter, remove the outer jacket a distance of 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Using #14 AWG (2.08mm²) wire and a grounding lead, fasten the grounding lead to the metallic shielding tape by making several wraps with the #14 AWG wire. Solder the ground lead to the metallic tape, avoiding excessive heat so the cable is not damaged. After soldering, wrap the soldered area with electrical insulating tape and overlap each cable jacket approximately 1-1/2 inches (38mm).
